It's Cass County Fair Week!
Are you excited? Are you heading there right now? Will you be there every day?
The Cass County Fair is the best county fair in the state of Nebraska hands down and it just keeps getting better and better. It's my favorite time of the year. Everyone is excited and I think just about everyone goes at least once to the fair. This year should be even better with more surprises, activities, and events.
Kona Ice will be there on Saturday and 20% of the proceeds will be to support the Elmwood-Murdock Cheer squad. On a hot day, the Ices will be a welcome treat and I'm sure they will be very popular. It's the same Kona Ice that has been at the Elmwood Park during the String Beans concert.

The Fair Board does a fantastic job getting corporate sponsors so it can be a FREE, a TOTALLY FREE fair with no admission fees, no parking fees and no extra charges for special events like Extreme Bull Riding or Figure 8 Races.

The Livestock building has to be one of the nicest in the state. It is bright, airy, comfortable for the animals and visitors. Don't miss the very popular Critter encounter, food demonstrations, BMX exhibit, goat milking, and pedal pull competitions are just a few of the things to see.
I LOVE the county fair and it's been a tradition for 30 years. It's the place to see people you may only see once a year. So if you see me sitting at a church food booth, sit down and let's chat. Or maybe you want to watch some barrel racing, I'll be there with my camera. Heck, I'll be everywhere with my camera.

If you have moved away and still yearn for the fair, then make sure to come back next week for fair photos and videos.
It will make you want to get on the plane next year just for Fair Week.
See you at the fair!

Governor Ricketts has issued a news release, which is now available below.

08/04/2019 01:30 PM CDT

Share Your Thoughts on the Costco Chicken Barns
Lincoln Premium Poultry is trying to bring four large chicken confinement barns with 65,000 chickens to Cass County.
These are Costco chicken barns which have been opposed in every other county they have targeted including Lancaster, Dodge, Washington, Colfax, Platte, Butler and Madison counties. The proposed site is three miles diagonally from Elmwood. If passed, this would be the largest animal confinement unit in Cass County – the size of six football fields full of chickens.
There are also other sites in Cass County being considered for other Costco barns.
The zoning commission will hold a public hearing at the Cass County Courthouse on Monday, August 12 at 7 p.m. Residents interested in sharing their opinions may attend the meeting in person or send an email to the zoning board at zoning@cassne.org.
Local residents may share their opinions with county commissioners who will make the final decision on this Conditional Use Permit. You can find the five commissioner’s name and email addresses at http://www.cassne.org/commish.html.

People are LOOKING for Sweet Corn!!
Do you have sweet corn? Bring it to the Elmwood park Saturday morning to the Farmers market.
Is your garden producing an overabundance of sweet corn, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes or anything else?
Do you like baking cinnamon rolls, cookies, or making crafts?
Do you have honey, eggs, or even make jelly, wine or seasoning dip mixes or soup mixes?
Bring them to the Elmwood Farmers market on Saturday mornings.
You don't need anything fancy. Heck, you don't even need a table. Just bring a chair to sit.
We have regulars who show up every week. People are asking for tomatoes, sweet corn, and other produce.

Introducing a brand new edition to the weekly news. A weekly recipe feature. This will continue during the Farmers Market season to learn how to fix new dishes with the bountiful garden harvest. For instance, I had no idea how to fix kohlrabi so I talked to the grower and now I have a new healthy dish to add to my families menu.

August 17 - Larry Hanson & Company
-----------------------
This release is to inform others that ESU #3 - Gifford Farm Education Center has now reopened for groups from schools, daycares, and other groups interested in our educational Farm Program.
Many of our other program areas on the farm are still affected by the flooding this past Spring. We have an anticipated opening of either this Fall or Spring of 2020 for those programs. However, most of our educational programs do travel to off-site locations.
We are having a community event this Saturday, August 10th called Teacher Appreciation Night from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. It is to honor our area teachers by allowing teachers free admission to the farm. Admission is $5/each aged 2 and up for additional guests. Our guests will be able to see all the farm animals, take a hayride, and learn about all of our educational programs. Teachers will be able to enter to win gift certificates from some area businesses in our “Teacher Only” raffle. The evening will end with guests being able to roast marshmallows for s’ mores and drink lemonade compliments of Gifford Farm.
Additional community events include:
Fall Festival September 21st and 22nd 10 am to 4 pm
Trick or Treat With the Animals October 19th 10 am to 3 pm
Santa at the Farm (weather permitting) December 7th 10 am to 1 pm
All event descriptions can be found on our Facebook page. Normal admission is $5/each aged 2 and up. At the moment we have limited groups signed up for our educational Farm program, but if interested in doing a shoot with a group, please contact the farm and we can provide possible dates for this.
