Water Therapy for Bella
14-year-old Bella was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
OI, in short, causes Bellas bones to break easily with little or no trauma. Bella quit counting her fractures at 50 over 10 years ago. Last month she fractured her tail bone just trying to scoot on her bottom on the stage at school during gym class.
Over the last few years, Isabella's fractures are not healing the way they used to. Since strong muscles protect weak bones it is very important that Bella exercise however since she is completely wheelchair bound her mobility is extremely limited. Her Ortho team has requested that she do water therapy 3-5 times a week. Unfortunately, the rehab location where she would be doing this water therapy is a 45-mile round trip.
With the cost of gas and missed classes and or work this is not an option either. I have decided as Isabella's mom to install a pool here at the house for her. This will allow for therapy 7 days a week, it will not be limited to 1 hour and it will do so many amazing things for her strength, mobility, and overall pain management.
This pool is a big undertaking. The first step required us to have the electric supply to the house trenched and rewired. The cost of this is $5,230. The cost of the above ground pool and heater with installation and set up is just under $10,000 and was financed with Green sky at $160/month.
The third step in this project will be getting Bellas wheelchair out to the pool and safely getting her into the water. The main floor of our house is not ground level. We will be knocking out a portion of the back wall and putting in a sliding glass door to allow her to take her wheelchair from the house safely out to the pool. The deck placed around the pool will have a Hoyer lift placed on it to safely move Bella from her wheelchair into the water.
This project is a huge undertaking but the positive difference it will make in Bellas life is priceless. The warm water will help her with bone pain, the water will allow her to move without putting undue stress on her bones allowing for very important muscle strength to help protect her bones and help reduce fractures. The exercise will allow her to be mobile, and the activity allows for her to lose weight increasing her mobility and reducing the stress excess weight puts on her fragile bones.
I want to thank everyone in advance for your prayers and support. I appreciate any help you can provide in helping me meet this need. Please take a minute to share this with your friends and family as well as send up a prayer for Bella.
Thank you all so very much
Lorraine

Elmwood #LittleFreePantry
The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall.

You may not get out as often, but people are still in need of emergency supplies and cupboards are bare in some Elmwood homes.
Earlier this month received an email from a former Elmwood resident, Ralph Parish. He would love to hear how you liked his short story and if you have any memory of Miss Kunz as a teacher.
This will be a multi-part story series, so make sure to come back each week.
Miss Kunz taught First Grade through Third Grade for more years than I could then remember. She taught four of the five Parish children.

Why I Love the Letter g - Part 12
All of those students that shared the experience of having Miss Kunz for their primary school teacher finished school through their senior year. Many went to advanced education fully clothed and in their right mind.
Deliver us from new math, the belief that memorization is unnecessary, bad manners and the vernacular of the uncouth.
Late May or early June Nineteen forty-three I was seated in the last row of desks beside the north wall of the classroom and was relishing the thought of being in a different room come the Fall term. I sensed Miss Kunz slowly walking up the aisle between my row and the wall. She stopped. I knew something was coming that I wouldn’t like. She placed her left hand on my shoulder, bent down and in a very low voice she said softly,
“Next year I will be teaching grades one through four,”
My heart sank.
“You won’t mind being with me one more year will you?”
“No.” I lied.
Whatever was said next I don’t remember. I wasn’t going to go to confession for that lie.
Now that a good many years have past and I know a few things that I didn’t know then. I know what font means and whenever I see the letter g and recognize Cambria or Times New Roman or any other font that dresses up the lower case g,
A flash from a film clip made over seventy years ago comes to mind, it’s Miss Kunz, smiling and the same age that she was then.
God bless you Miss Kunz, where ever you are. You laid the foundation stones that were the start of the road to the character for many, many young lives.
