Last Week for the Elmwood Farmers Market
Yes, this is indeed the last week for the Farmers Market in the park for the 2018 season. Last week there were 6 vendors with everything from farm fresh eggs, cinnamon rolls, fresh local honey to Decorated Wine Bottles (For $1.00)
There was still zucchini to be had, squash and tomatoes. Don't know about you, but my tomatoes didn't do well this year and I'm needing to buy some for more salsa.
You may learn how to make apple butter, jalapeno jelly, or even squash dinner rolls. Yes, Squash rolls, they are tasty and you can get free samples! I've heard they are even better warm with butter.
In season apples have turned the bakers into making apple muffins, apple bread, and apple biscotti. Yes, we have biscotti and hot lemongrass tea, or maybe even some fresh made apple hot cider to go with it. What a delicious combination on a cool fall day.
Biscotti is Italian for "twice-baked" and it's the adult version of milk and cookies. Dunk that crispy bread into hot coffee and it instantly becomes a soft yummy tasty treat.
Why have I emphasized so much on the Farmers Market this year? Besides the fact I'm there every week?
It's because this weekly event has become a gathering place for people to come and visit with others.
Teresa and Hank come almost every Saturday and it's always fun to play with Hank. He's a Husker fan don't you know? Even though we haven't won a game YET.
People have visited from all over the country, and WORLD actually including Washington State, Colorado, Chicago, Minneapolis, Cameroon, and Japan. Ok, the last two are exchange student from Elmwood-Murdock, but they count.
This doesn't count the vast number of people who have visited from various places around Nebraska.
It has also been an opportunity for people to showcase their crafts, skills, and talents. We have metal workers in town, people who make all natural skin care products, beekeepers, and local sustainable farmers.
Need a really cute Halloween trick-or-treat bag? They are only $4.00 Can't beat that and it's better than a plastic pumpkin.
What about handmade greeting cards? Only $2.00
So come on out this Saturday to the park from 8:00 - Noon, the Nebraska game isn't until 2:30 pm so you have some more time.
SEE YOU THERE!!
Pumpkins are back at the Oerhlerking Farm
Don't forget to stop by the pumpkin patch at the Oerlerking Farm on Highway 34. There are no "official hours". Just stop by, take a picture by the tractors or wagons or tractors and leave payment in the can.
The kids can even play in the corn pit.
West Nile Warning
Two local Elmwood residents have been hospitalized recently for West Nile.
This is no joke!
Mosquitoes are out and it's important to use insect repellent. Symptoms include a high fever, a very severe headache, and stiffness. It may feel like a very bad flu, but WORSE. Both people were in the hospital for a week, so it is a major illness. It can cause encephalitis or meningitis.
One person I spoke to it's something he never wants again and he is still feeling very weak.
Just because it's the end of the month doesn't mean the Quilt show is over.
It's a fall quilt show which means it runs until October 14th.
Would you like a Barn Quilt for your home or Garden??
You can bid on the wooden barn quilts displayed outside and visit the Bess Streeter Aldrich page and see the "live auction" and the current bid.
The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall.
The items in it are FREE for those who are needy, don't have food in their cabinets and need just a little something to get them by till the next day. Various people donate items to put in the cupboard, and they notice that several items do disappear.
Spread the news. Stop by and put something in when you come back from grocery shopping. If you know a family or anyone struggling, let them know this resource is available in town.
What can you donate, what may you find?
Generally, canned vegetables and proteins, personal care items, and paper goods. Kid-friendly non-perishables, crayons, and school supplies are perfect, even travel soap and personal hygiene items are welcome.

Work on N-63 Alvo North Realignment
March 15, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work is scheduled to continue the week of March 19 on N-63, between Alvo and I-80, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Knife River, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa has the $11,758,926 contract. Work will include realignment of N‑63, culverts and box culverts, and wetland mitigation. This will be the second of two phases of work.
During this phase, N-63 will be closed to traffic from Reference Post 4+20 (Alvo) to Reference Post 9+68 (Church Road). A marked detour will be in place along I-80 to N-66 to N-50 to US-34 for southbound traffic and along US-34 to N-50 to N-66 to I-80 for northbound traffic. This portion of the project is anticipated to be completed in November 2018.
The Department’s project manager is Jesse De Los Santos of Lincoln. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through work zones and along detours.
