Solar Eclipse-2017 Family Night”
(Sponsored by the Elmwood Library)
On Monday, August 21st at approximately 11:25 AM we will find ourselves on the edge of a rare celestial event, a total eclipse of the sun. The Elmwood Public Library and the Elmwood-Murdock School’s science teacher, Laura Stock, combined their efforts and presented wonderful information about this rare occurrence and the view-ability possible in our area during two Eclipse Family Night events in August.

This is unique because it will travel through the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston South Carolina, dissecting Nebraska from Alliance in the Northwest corner to Falls City in the Southeast tip of the state. Elmwood is located approximately 4 miles north of the “path of totality”. We will be able to see an eclipse where the moon will almost cover the sun completely.

On Monday, August 14th dozens of community members, parents, kids and the public attended a Solar Eclipse workshop at the Elmwood-Murdock Elementary School.

There were crafts and activities for the kids to learn more about this once in a lifetime event that will be happening right over our heads in Elmwood Nebraska. While Elmwood is not quite in the totality area we are only -4% from totality and it's going to be pretty spectacular.

Free solar glasses were handed out AND if you have gotten yours yet there is still time.

Stop by the Elmwood library while supplies last for your free pair of solar eclipse glasses. You can't watch it with them.

It was wonderful to watch the kids get excited about science and the enormity of space, the sun and how the earth and moon fit into the solar system. Greg Goldman, a retired science teacher who grew up in Elmwood and taught at Anselmo-Merna high school laid out a 100 yard Solar System model with the Sun (bowling ball) at the football Goal post and Pluto all the way at the Aldrich house, smaller than the head of a pin.

Earth was positioned at the 35 yard line and the moon was only 2.3" from earth.

To view times and locations in Nebraska where the 100% total eclipse can be viewed visit the.Nebraska Game and Parks Website for an interactive map. We are only four miles away from seeing the TOTAL eclipse. It's worth a drive south a view minutes.

The only SAFE way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special purpose solar filters or eclipse glasses.
Remember, you can pick up your FREE solar eclipse glasses at the Elmwood Library. Jacey Zimmerman is modeling a pair here while she watches the sunset.

Visit Dr. Greg Clements (he is Elmwoods local astronomer...did you know that?? I didn't) website for more links to engaging information, live streaming sites, and towns who will be having viewing parties in the area of totality. He has taught Astronomy at Midland University in Fremont.
The eclipse in Elmwood will start Do not look at the eclipse or take pictures with a camera without using a special filter. By not following this guideline you can burn out your camera filter.

We have canceled the viewing party which was to be held during the eclipse on August 21st.
It turns out that since we are so close to the actual path of totality that everybody is planning on driving south to actually experience the total eclipse!
Our eclipse glasses have arrived!
You do not need to pick up glasses for those who will be working at or attending school on that day. We are providing glasses for the school. Glasses are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. REMEMBER: Do not look at the sun without special protection. This can permanently damage your eyes.

Husker Fans Salute the Troops 2017
Husker Fans Salute the Troops 2017 – The mission is to salute Nebraska Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines: active duty, national guard, reserve, retired and veterans, to say “Thank you for your service to our Nation” so they know the Husker Nation will never forget their sacrifice and dedication.
This is an unprecedented event in the history of military support to the Armed Forces. This weekend hosts troops and their families from all services, of all ranks, to come together and cheer on their team as they play Purdue on October 28th, 2017.
This weekend is more than just a watch party, though. It is a chance for these servicemen and women to be treated like the heroes they are with an all access, private tour of Memorial Stadium and a brunch in their honor.
2017 marks the tenth year for this event. 2008 was the first year held during the OU game and attended by about 70 troopers and their families. Since then we have had to limit our attendance as it has grown to nearly 500 attendees. Each year we try to improve the troopers experience and being our tenth year we are expecting this to be the best.
Registration for the 10th annual Husker Fans Salute the Troops is now open to first-time attendees --http://www.huskersalute.org/.
Hi, Elmwood Park Lovers...
We are needing some volunteers to help at the Harvest Moon Hustle after party
Friday, September 15th from 6:00 to 11:00.pm
We will be working at the Elmwood Fire Barn making sure people know where they are going, keeping the tables cleaned up, taking tickets, and whatever else needs to be done.
I did it last year and had a blast! You get to meet a ton of really fun people who have just finished running a long race and are grateful to have a place to sit and relax. There is a band playing so plenty of great tunes and you get dinner before it starts!
And the totally awesome part is that the Harvest Moon Hustle group will make a $400 donation to our park for providing volunteers.
That is what I like to call EASY MONEY! If you are interested let Julie Anderson know or go to the website, click on the register button, and sign up to be a volunteer for the after party.
It will look like you are signing up to be in the race but no worries, it is already full. You are just signing up to be a volunteer. You will have a blast!!

We are currently serving hard ice cream in dishes.
we have 8 different flavors to choose from.
