Then & Again...

Then and Again will be holding a Grand Opening on Saturday, November 24^th, Holiday Extravaganza day! The newly renovated Masonic Lodge at the corner of 4^th and D Street is now a store with a little of this and a little of that. They have repurposed and used furniture (some old and some newer) like hutches, end tables, dining room tables, bedroom sets, and desks. There are knick-knacks, candles, purses, and much more! They also accept items for consignment. There will also be a man cave called “Lou’s Garage” for the guys to come in and check out.

Ryan and Kelly Anderson have worked long and hard to renovate the Lodge and are excited to start this new chapter. Make plans to stop in and see what everyone is talking about. RUTALKIN?

Parade of Homes for the Holiday Extravaganza

Tickets go on sale Monday, November 5, 2012

The Elmwood-Murdock Booster Club proudly presents a Holiday Parade of Homes on Saturday, November 24, 2012. The homes on display are Lindsay and Jeff Backemeyer, Kris and Mike Boston, Jodi and Rob Cooper, Susan and Randy Marlatt, Carae and Johnny Oehlerking, Judeen and Ross Rikli. Also included on the tour are St. Mary’s Catholic Church and 4^th Street Market.

People are encouraged to purchase their tickets before the event. Then bring your tickets and guide, listing all the homes with map and descriptions of the homes to each stop. An FBLA student will greet you at the door and punch your tickets. We ask that all participants remove their shoes or wear the disposable shoe covers provided at the door. The homeowners will be present to welcome you and answer questions. The homes are open from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. so can be visited at your leisure and no appointment is necessary. Start your tour at any of the homes and finish up at St. Mary’s Catholic church with coffee and dessert (FREE WILL DONATION) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lastly stop at 4^th Street Market and put your ticket in for the raffle, or do some shopping for your holiday decorating ideas. 4^th Street Market will be open all day until 5:30 p.m. Take your time and enjoy the tour! Some people will want to visit all the homes, others just the locations that interest them most.

Advanced Tickets are $10.00 for adults (ages 10 and up) and children ages 9 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at 4^th Street Market, Bits and Pieces, Corn Growers State Bank, American Exchange Bank, Elmwood Convenience Store, and Elementary and High School Main offices or contact Cyndi Dwyer. FBLA Students - Remembering our Fallen

Yesterday 15 students, members of the Future Business Leaders of America along with their sponsors, from Elmwood-Murdock High School placed flags in the yard at the museum – each flag representing a U. S. service member who has died during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Each of the 2,044 red flags represent a service member who died in Afghanistan; the 4,488 yellow flags represent those who lost their lives in Iraq. Each of the 6,532 flags has the name and state of residence of the service members. Those from Nebraska are represented in the outline of our state.
We thank the FBLA students for this display to help us understand the number of service members who have paid the ultimate price - 6,532 – almost ten times the population of Elmwood. Unfortunately, as each day goes by, this number only increases. Please stop by the museum and take a few moments to view the display and remember those who have died for our freedom and those who are continuing to fight each day.

Brennan Costello, son of Steve and Becky Costello of Gothenburg and grandson of Joann Hill of Elmwood is a National FFA Officer. He was elected to the National FFA officer team at the recent 85th National FFA Convention in October in Indianapolis, Ind. Costello is the FFA Central Region vice president for 2012-13. He was the Nebraska State FFA President for 2011-12. The officer team was also featured on the screen in Times Square.

UNL student Brennan Costello is one of six students from across the nation who will help lead the National FFA Organization in 2012-2013.

Costello, an agribusiness major in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, will serve as FFA Central Region vice president.

"We are very proud of Brennan," said Ronnie Green, University of Nebraska vice president and Harlan vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. "He is a shining example of the outstanding students we have the opportunity to work with daily in the University of Nebraska's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The challenges of the by I Want This" href="http://newsroom.unl.edu/announce/todayatunl/1809/10102" target="_blank">21st century demand the best and brightest of this generation to tackle them — the future is exceedingly bright with young people like Brennan Costello leading the way."

Costello was elected during the 2012 National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis. He is one of four regional vice presidents; a secretary and president also were selected.

Costello was the 2011-12 Nebraska FFA president.

In the next year, the group will travel more than 100,000 miles across the country to engage top leaders in business, government and education. The national officers will lead personal growth and by I Want This" href="http://newsroom.unl.edu/announce/todayatunl/1809/10102" target="_blank">leadership training seminars for FFA members. The team will help set policies that will guide the future of FFA and promote agricultural literacy.

"It takes a highly motivated person to become a successful national FFA officer," said Dwight Armstrong, National FFA Organization CEO. "It is an opportunity afforded to just a few of our members."

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 557,318 student members in grades 7 through 12 who belong to one of 7,498 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

About 8 years ago Pat Wray decided to do something nice for my son. She organized the communities of Elmwood and Murdock and conducted fund raisers to raise money for a handcycle for Joe. As most of you know my son has spina bifida and doesn't have full use of his legs. With the help from the football team and the Lions Club Pat was able to raise $1,500 to buy the bike. She found a dealer in Rhode Island that was willing to help. He loved the idea of the town coming together to raise the money for the handcycle. He made Pat a good deal and shipped the bike to her. It was assembled and presented to Joe on Christmas Day at the Flying Wheels Fun Center. Many people from town came to watch. Joe jumped on and started riding it right away. He rode it around the rink floor and eventually rode it home. That was the beginning of many adventures for Joe and his bike. We were so touched that the community did this for Joe. We were new to town and didn't know many people. Thanks to Pat for looking out for Joe he was able to be more independent.

Joe gave up riding a few years ago when he out grew the bike. We've kept it all this time just waiting for the right person to come along to share it with. I found that person last week on facebook. I happened to mention that we were looking for a home for the handcycle and one of Joe's old wheelchairs. One of my facebook friends asked about them and before I knew it we had found an owner! Michele Tanderup's daughter, Angel, is about the same age that Joe was when he first got the bike. And she has spina bifida, too. Angel and her family live in the bluffs between Brownville and Nemaha. Her dad works at Cooper Nuclear Station but I never see him. I knew about Angel but had never met her until Sunday. The family came up to look at the bike and when Angel rolled into our house we thought that she would fall in love with the bike because it was the first thing she would see when she came in. We totally didn't think about the dog. Angel saw Romeo and fell in love. Then she saw Zoey and it was all over. While her parents checked out the bike Angel tried out her dog training techniques on our hounds. Eventually she saw the handcycle and started squealing with delight.

They decided that Angel loved the bike and they would take it. Angel's dad asked what he owed us for it and I explained to him that it was a gift to Joe so it would be our gift to Angel. All they have to do is find a new home for it someday with another kid who is just as special as ours.

I wanted to share this with you to let you know that we have paid it forward. Your kindness and generousity to Joe has not been forgotten. It will live on through Angel and her family.
