School's Out, School's Out, Teachers Let the Mules Out....
Kids are everywhere this summer, ball fields, parks, roller blading, bicycling, or just playing outside. Slow down and scan your horizons. Watch out for the kids because chances are they aren't watching for you! Also, just in case they get bored and try to get into mischief remember there is an 11:00 curfew for anyone under 18. If you see kids out after that you are encouraged to give your local sheriff's office a call. Not that the kids are up to no good...but just to make sure. Seems like every year the mischief starts before most people even realize it!
Thankful for Every Day, Good Friends and Family!
Seeing Amanda and Don Cronk at their son's T-ball game last weekend was heart warming. Don suffered a heart attack the week before and is recovering. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers for the family and keep them coming as Don goes through this journey back to good health. They are blessed with many family and friends who have helped out with prayers and love and food! Life is short...Love hard and laugh often. Appreciate everyone! We are so glad to have Don with us!

2012 MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE
Memorial Day 2012, a day to pause and reflect upon the true meaning of one of the oldest and most revered holidays in our country – a day to remember again the service and sacrifice of those upon whose very lives rest the foundation of freedom – a day of remembrance for those brave men and women who have died in our nation’s service.
When 16 Civil War veterans met on October 14, 1882, and chartered the Elmwood Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Post 123, they probably could not have imagined that 130 years later, and probably each year in between, the townspeople of Elmwood would gather at the cemetery for the very same reason they did so many years ago - to honor “fallen comrades.” Nor could they have imagined the battles or locations our young men and women have been called to in the defense of our freedom and rights.
Memorial Day Services have been a long-standing tradition in Elmwood – perhaps the oldest tradition in our town. Minutes of the G.A.R. Post 123 on May 18th, 1899, noted “On motion, the Post will meet at 9 o’clock sharp to decorate the graves of fallen comrades in Elmwood and other cemeteries……On motion the several preachers of Elmwood and vicinity are invited to hold Union Memorial services on May 28.” And they would march from the G.A.R. Hall carrying the flowers to decorate the graves of their comrades.
The camaraderie and sense of unity and purpose was strong among those Civil War veterans, as it is with all veterans. Because the G.A.R. was established to include only Union veterans of the Civil War, as the number of members of the G.A.R. Post diminished over the years, there would come a time that a Post would have to be disestablished. Each year as the graves to be decorated grew in number, and the number of comrades decorating those graves became fewer, the members of the Elmwood Post felt so strongly about maintaining their Post, that for several years in the early 1930’s, when their membership was only two and then only one, they paid dues for three so they could still be considered an official G.A.R. Post.
And so it is with that same sense of tradition, purpose, and responsibility that many of us will march to or gather at the Elmwood Cemetery on Memorial Day and we will remember again all the veterans laid to rest in our beautiful peaceful cemetery – each with a cross and American flag flying proudly in the breeze. We will pause to remember the true cost of freedom and honor those who made that ultimate sacrifice. We will remember the sons of Elmwood and surrounding area who left this peaceful Cass County town – but never returned – three from World War I, five from World War II, and one from the Viet Nam War. We will especially remember the two who have only a memorial marker here – one being interred in The Netherlands and one in the Mediterranean Sea – and we will remember their families who never had a chance to say that final good-bye.
From the words of Abraham Lincoln – “From these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.” It is our responsibility and duty as citizens of this great country to teach our children and grandchildren that Memorial Day is about those who gave the last full measure of devotion – those who gave up their tomorrows – their hopes and dreams – the chance to gaze radiantly into the eyes of their childhood sweetheart as they are married - the chance to hold their child born while they were at war – to tenderly hold a newborn grandchild – they gave it all in the service of their country – OUR country - they gave so we can have our todays.
We all owe all of our veterans, past and present a debt of gratitude, but for this one day, it is our solemn duty to remember again why it is important that we never forget those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Let us remember again….

"Hansel & Gretel" Auditions at Lofte Theatre
Manley, NE [May 17, 2012] - For the sixth straight year, the Lofte Community Theatre will be partnering with Missoula Children's Theater for a children's production. This year's musical is, "Hansel & Gretel."
Auditions will be held at the theater on Monday, June 11 at 10am. Auditions are open to students entering first through seventh grade. Approximately sixty children will be cast. There is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play. The audition process will last approximately two hours. Some children will be asked to stay for the first rehearsal immediately after auditions.
Rehearsals will take place at the Lofte June 11 through June 16, 10am to 2:30pm. While not all actors will be needed for all sessions, they should have a clear schedule for the week. Actors should bring a sack lunch each day.
The Lofte will hold two public performances of "Hansel & Gretel," on Saturday, June 16th. The first is at 3pm, the second is at 6pm. The cast will be called for a dress rehearsal 2-4 hours before the first performance. Adult admission is $8; children are $5.

Multi-Instrumentalists, Greenblatt & Seay, will be giving free workshops on Saturday, May 26, at the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice, Nebraska. Championship fiddler, Deborah Greenblatt, will be giving a free fiddle workshop at 10 AM. David Seay's free harmonica workshop will be at 12 p.m. with all participants receiving a free harmonica.

Elmwood-Murdock Student Wins Lofte Scholarship
Manley, NE [May 21, 2012] - The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley has selected Lizzy Pegler of Elmwood as its 2012 scholarship winner.
Miss Pegler is a recent graduate of Elmwood-Murdock High School. She was Salutatorian of her class having maintained a 4.0 for all four years of her high school career. Miss Pegler held officer positions in FBLA, FCCLA and Science Club. Some of her other activities included drama, speech, vocal and instrumental music, Quiz Bowl and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This summer she will travel to Washington D.C. to participate in the All-National Honor Choir. She will also go to San Antonio for the FBLA Nationals.
Miss Pegler has obtained a scholarship to Doane College where she will double major in Theater and Journalism and minor in Music. The Lofte wishes Lizzy much success in pursuit of her college degree.

The Elmwood Murdock Merchants Association (EMMA) has a new and unique opportunity for its members this year. To promote community improvement, EMMA is offering two grants for up to $250 each. The funds provided by this grant are intended to improve and promote the communities of Elmwood and Murdock. Grants can be written for $500 with potential reimbursement of $250. In other words EMMA will match 50% up to $250. One grant will be awarded on February 1st and one on August 1st. EMMA members and local non-profit organizations are eligible for the grant. The funds could be used for a new sign, curb appeal improvements, brochures, etc. The next grant application due date is July 15. The previous grant winner was the Murdock Museum. Their project was to put up a new sign at the edge of Murdock advertising the museum.

Speaking of the annual Murdock 4th of July Celebration...lace up your shoes for the Dillon Synovec Memorial Run. Have you thought about having a float? It's time to start thinking and designing! Let's make this parade the best ever! Make your float and show up the morning of the 4th and get in line! The kids really like it if you throw candy and they just go crazy if you are throwing Mr. Freezies! Stick around for the games and watermelon afterwards. Lunch on main street and the firefighters water fights are a great way to spend the afternoon. There is baseball and pie ale mode, too! Bring the kids out and spend the day!
