COMBINING ART, LITERATURE AND HISTORY

Historic Bess Streeter Aldrich House Hosts First-Annual Quilt Show

Elmwood, NE – April 17, 2012 – There will be something for everyone on May 5th and 6th in Elmwood, as quilting, literature and history collide at the Bess Streeter Aldrich House’s first-annual quilt show.

A collection of quilts from the Oxbow Quilters, many of them prize-winners at local and state fairs, will be displayed throughout the author’s historic home. Guests can visit with some of the quilters and Aldrich House tour guides on self-guided tours of the prairie-style home, built in 1922.

“We’re hoping to bring in lots of new visitors who haven’t toured the home before, and encourage those who have visited before to return for this special show,” Aldrich Foundation Teresa Lorensen said. “And, the quilters are excited to show their creations at a local venue.”

The show begins Saturday, May 5, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and continues Sunday, May 6 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 6-12, and free for ages 5 and under.

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House is located at 204 East F Street, Elmwood, NE and is open for guided tours on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.BessStreeterAldrich.org

The Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation is a non-profit organization which operates the Bess Streeter Aldrich House & Museum. The foundation has sponsored a short story contest since 2003. For more information about the house & museum, the short story contest, or other annual events, visit www.BessStreeterAldrich.org.

 Flag ceremony

Elmwood-Murdock's Troop 360 had an event Saturday (4/29) evening. The evening started with a flag retirement ceremony. The ceremony is a respectful way to retire and destroy the American flag when it is worn and unusable.

Then, two Cubs crossed over to become boy scouts in a crossover ceremony.   Hayden Ernst and Cody Bornemeier crossed over to Boy Scouts.

The Boy Scouts then held a Court of Honor to receive merit badges and other honors.

World Book Night 2012

On Monday, April 23, Elmwood took part in a historic event – World Book Night 2012. On that night across the country participating “book donors” gave away 500,000 free books to encourage reading. Karey Koehn and her daughter Whitney participated as book donors, the only ones in Cass County and one of just a few in the state.

Karey and Whitney gave out 20 free copies of The Hunger Games at the Elmwood Library to local residents. Since they enjoyed reading the book together, they wanted to find other young people and their parents who might appreciate reading this book.  They also donated one copy of the book to the Elmwood Library.

This is the first ever US World Book Night. The event has taken place for several years in England and Ireland. Twenty books were selected to be distributed for the event. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was the most requested book from the list, and many of the book donors did not receive it and were given an alternate book to hand out for World Book Night. Karey and Whitney received the popular book because they applied early to be book donors and wrote a compelling application requesting this specific book.

If you missed out on your chance to get a free copy of The Hunger Games during World Book Night, you can still check it out at the Elmwood Library.  But be patient, the library has copies of all three books in the popular series – but they are high demand!

Former Elmwood Felines are Local Celebrities!

Nikki cats

The two cats on the right, Cali and Whiskers, were born about 2 years ago to Deb and Cassie Novak and adopted by my daughter, Millie.  At some point we deteremined we had too many cats and dogs and the cats had to go for their own safety.  We found a home for them with a friend from Lincoln, Nikki Blitzke.  She instantly fell in love with them and then added two more to her menagarie.  Last week these three won first place in the Lincoln Journal Star's Pick of the Litter Pet Photo Contest.  Not only did Nikki get a the honor of knowing her cats are the Pick of the Litter, she also won $200.  Congratulations!!
