Let's Give Them Something to Talk About
Lea Anderson helps her daddy, Ryan, shovel dirt from the front yard of their new building. They are getting ready to pave it for more parking. Now, why would they be needing more parking? Isn't the new lot in the back of the building enough? Ryan and his wife, Kelly, bought the Masonic Lodge and are renovating it. Kelly will have a store in the top level which will require more parking on the street. The store will carry an eclectic inventory ranging from gift items to antiques. They have yet to decide what the lower level will be used for so if you are thinking about opening a store or cafe contact Kelly! She can help you out with some space. The family business is called RUTALKIN. Get it? Are You Talking? And people are talking! The rumors are flying about what's going on at the ol' Lodge. You don't need to speculate, Kelly will tell you all about it. She is excited to bring another business to town to compliment what already exists. Her goal is to not compete but to add another store to help draw people to town. Shop local! We look forward to watching the progress on the corner and we will definitely be talkin' about it!
More Leah...
Thank goodness they had her help! It could have taken all day to move this dirt!
What's a construction site without a little butt crack? And what a cute butt crack it is! I bet when Grandpa Lou sees it he will buy her a pair of overalls!

Speaking of Dogs...
Just a friendly reminder to license your dogs before May 1st! The cost is $6 per dog plus you have to show proof of a valid rabies certificate. This is a mandatory thing. Anyone not acquiring a dog license for their pooch will be subject to a citation...and not a good neighbor citation. After May 1st there is an additional charge of $50 per dog! Yikes, Scooby! If you have 3 or more dogs you have to apply for a kennel permit which has a $25 fee. These dang dogs are expensive! But we love them!
They keep the kids busy. A friendly game of tug-o-war can last for hours! Followed up by a nice long nap for all of them!
It's a battle of wills at this point. But Zoey outweighs Atticus by about 50 lbs so ultimately she will take him town...and then he climbs on her and they are off again!

Just in case you missed the letter about the dogs....wouldn't it be sweet to have all the cats licensed to keep track of them, too. That would be like nailing jello to a wall.

Do you Remember…?
Marianna Wimberley of Kearney shares her love of people and sandhill cranes as an eight-year volunteer at the National Audubon Society’s Rowe Sanctuary southwest of Gibbon. She jokes that she has a “feud” with the gift shop cash register, so she spends most of her time at the information booth.
People who have seen her as a Rowe volunteer for the past eight years might say that Marianna Wimberley, 81, never tires of anything. “She brings joy,” Rowe Education Director Keanna Leonard said, especially during the late winter and early spring weeks when the cranes stop in the Central Platte Valley during their migration. “She greets people and makes them feel welcome.”
A native of Elmwood, Marianna graduated from high school at age 16 and worked at Lincoln's Bryan Hospital. She met her late husband, Wally, who was teaching at the University of Nebraska College of Phamacy. After a short courtship they married in August of 1950. They moved to Wally's hometown of Kearney in 1954 where he owned a phamacy until he retired.
Once their children were older Marianna took classes at Kearney State College, graduating in 1968 with a degree in education. She majored in English with a minor in History. She taught for 14 years at Sumner Eddyville-Miller Public School.
Growing up in Elmwood, a small town of less than 600 people east of Lincoln, gave Marianna Wimberley the opportunity to know Nebraska author Bess Streeter Aldrich.
Aldrich is best known for her pioneer novels, including “A Lantern in Her Hand,” The Rim of the Prairie,” “A White Bird Flying,” “Spring Came on Forever,” “The Lieutenant’s Lady” and “Miss Bishop.”
Wimberley said Aldrich once recommended her as a teenage baby sitter for her grandchildren.
Aldrich’s daughter lived in Lincoln and was going to be away from home for a PTA meeting in New York. Wimberley said the dad was busy with work, so Aldrich’s daughter asked her mother if she knew of a local girl who could help care for the grandchildren during her absence.
Aldrich knew Marianna as a neighbor girl. “Everybody knew everybody else” in the small town, Wimberley said.
They all knew Aldrich.
Wimberley recalled the time the author had gone to a Lincoln hairdresser and came back with the front half of her combed-back hair white and “the rest was this lovely shade of purple.”
“I don’t know what happened in the process … but she got a kick out of it and turned it into something funny,” Wimberley said.
Mike Winter, of Elmwood, contributed this story to the newsletter this week. Marianna Wimberley was the class sponsor at his high school for his junior and senior play. At the time he had never heard of Elmwood let alone the fact that Mrs. Wimberley was from there. His mother recently sent him the story about Mrs. Wimberley from the Kearney Hub. Now he is wondering if anyone remembers her and has any information about her. The full story about Marianna Wimberley and her volunteer work can be found at www.kearneyhub.com.
