Elmwood Man Receives Wachiska's Earthkeeper Award

For over 35 years Wachiska Audubon has worked on behalf of birds, wildlife habitat preservation, responsible urban development and support of nature education for children and adults.

The Mission of the Wachiska Audubon Society is to preserve and restore native grasslands and other natural ecosystems, promote birding, support native wildlife, provide educational opportunities and advocate on behalf of our natural environment and sustainability, especially in Southeastern Nebraska.

Wachiska Audubon is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society , serving 17 Southeast Nebraska counties. It is one of four such chapters in Nebraska, and one of more than 500 chapters nationwide.

Monthly meetings feature guest speakers and programs on a variety of nature and environmental topics. Chapter members participate in numerous field trips throughout the year. Special events such as the annual Christmas Bird Count, Birdathon and Backyard Habitat Tour highlight the program year and draw thousands of people from the community.

Wachiska Audubon provides volunteer and monetary support to local nature centers and sanctuaries such as Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center and Pioneers Park Nature Center.

The chapter takes pride in its role of preserving several tallgrass prairie remnants located in Butler, Gage, Cass, Colfax, Fillmore, Gage, Johnson, Lancaster, Otoe, Pawnee, Saline, Saunders and Richardson counties in Southeast Nebraska.

Wachiska's Earthkeeper Award has been presented to Duane Hovorka, executive director of the Nebraska Wildlife Federation.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

Next week the Elementary Student Council will be holding a Staff Appreciation Week.  This is a week to thank the staff for all they do to make our school such a wonderful place.  The staff will be treated daily with goodies in the work room and will also get an extra planning time on Friday, April 20th.   Any donations of treats, goodies, cards, etc. would be appreciated.

While the teachers are enjoying their extra planning time, we are going to refocus our attention on our anti-bullying efforts.  The student council members will help Mrs. Paulsen teach anti-bullying lessons to the students. Students will stand in silent observance for seven seconds for the fact that every seven seconds someone in the United States is bullied.  We will then make a pledge to stop bullying in our school and release balloons.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office or Mrs. Paulsen.
