Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be hosting a special "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp", for fiddlers, violists, guitarists, and ukulele players.  The sessions will be led by championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt.

The camp will be on Monday, March 12 - Friday, March 16, from 9 AM to 1 PM.  You can sign up for 1 day, or 2 days, or 3 days, or 4 days, or all 5 days.

On Monday & Tuesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation.  We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords.  You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.

On Wednesday & Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets.  Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of  camp, just in case your ears need the help.

On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.

Enrollment for the "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp" is limited, so e-mail Deborah at debby@greenblattanseay.com if you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions.

Little Footsteps at Mahoney State Park

KBC Productions announces that their production of "Little Footsteps" will open at Kountze Memorial Theater inside Mahoney State Park on Saturday, January 21.  Written by Ted Tally, the story is a hilarious and cautionary tale of impending parenthood.  Ben and Joanie are a couple who are about to become parents for the first time.  Ben's own uneasiness about the situation soon leads to Joanie finding herself as a single parent-to-be.  Will they grow up before their baby does?  This show has a suggested rating of PG-13.

Starring in the show as the young couple are Corey Misek and Noelle Bohaty, both of Lincoln.  Director Kevin Colbert and his wife Betty, both of Weeping Water, also appear in the play.

Performances run January 21-22, 27-29, February 3-5, 10-12, 14, and 17-19.  Showtimes are 7:30pm except for Sundays which are 2pm matinees.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children.  For reservations, please call Mahoney state Park at (402) 944-2523 ext. 7122.

SPRING CARNIVAL NEWS

The S.O.S. Spring Carnival is scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2012.  This is our major fundraiser for the year.   If any parents work or frequent places where donations may be possible, please contact an S.O.S. member.  We can either contact the business or provide a letter for the parent to use when asking for a donation.

BIRTH TO FIVE SERVICES

If a parent or a physician has questions or concerns about their child’s development for infants and toddlers to 3 years of age that person should contact the local Early Development Network Referral Agency of the child/family or call:  Nebraska Child Find (toll Free) at 1-888-806-6287.

For additional information on Nebraska Child Find for all children, please visit: http://www.childfind.ne.gov.

Once a referral has been made the following will take place:

The referral will be appointed to a Services Coordinator from Education Service Unit #3, who will contact the family within seven days to determine if they are interested in Early Development Network services.

With the family’s permission, the Services Coordinator will arrange for an assessment with the local school district to determine the unique needs of the child and his or her eligibility. The Services Coordinator can link the family with community resources before the assessment if needed.

If the child qualifies, the Services Coordinator will identify others who can participate on a team to help the family develop an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), which sets goals for the child and family and identifies activities and services needed to achieve these goals. The IFSP will be completed within 45 days, so the family can access Early Development Network services as quickly as possible

If there are any additional questions or are if you would like to set up an appointment for your child that is three to five years of age to be screened please contact Heidi Zierott at 867-2341 or 994-2125.

EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM

State Law requires school officials to contact the County Attorney once a student misses more than twenty days of school for the year.  Parents will be notified once their child is absent five days in a quarter and ten days in a semester, and fifteen days in a year. (See page 16 in the Student-Parent Handbook). Please contact Mr. Friedrich if you have any questions regarding this policy.

NOROVIRUS

CDC has released confirmation of Norovirus in our area. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, vomiting,

headache, muscle aches, and general fatigue. Symptoms usually last 1-2 days.  Anyone with these symptoms

should not be handling food for the family.  Please be sure that if these symptoms arise to keep hydrated with

water or Gatorade to prevent dehydration.  There is no vaccine or treatment for this virus.

Good hand washing practices and use of alcohol based hand sanitizer is the best protection.

Areas exposed to vomit or diarrhea should be disinfected immediately and laundry that is soiled should be

washed separately.  If symptoms do not go away, you should contact your physician.

Thank You-

Renee Wynegar, RN BSN
