This was a big weekend for Elmwood. We celebrated 125 years! It was quite a birthday party. It started with a running race in the morning..either 10K or 1K. The weather didn't cooperate but a little rain kept the runners cool. As soon as the race was over so was the rain.

The start of the 10K.

The start of the 1 mile walk/ run.

Heather Bornemeier organized the race with help from Shannon Josoff.

The winner of the 10K. He was the oldest participant and the fastest. His time was 44 min. 50 sec. He actually finished twice. One he finished the race he had to back track to find his dog. He crossed the line the second time with his dog and the second group of finishers...10 minutes later.

These three finished the 1 mile run first.

Tom and Kalee Brewer ran the mile together. Tom is back from Afghanistan for Kalee's graduation.

Hayzel chills out during the race in dad's arms.
After the race I checked out some of the other events. I wasn't able to make it to all of them so I'll give you the highlights of some of them. A new salon opened Saturday. Cindy Hovorka opened Your Therapist on main street.

Cindy Hovorka invites you to stop by.

Cindy has two stations, one for coloring and one for cutting.

The original building had a shower in it so when they remodeled Cindy had a new one installed.

Cindy has a great veiw of the main street.

The Elmwood Murdock Merchants' Association gave "Your Therapist" the honorary first dollar of profit.

Advanced Contracting LLC, Justin Mommens' company, did the remodeling for Cindy. If you had seen this place before you understand how much it has changed. Very impressive!
4th Street Market was open with fresh flowers, gifts, wine, and warm beer available. Deb Lenz has made it very cozy and welcoming. Kalee and I stopped by and she found a cute arrangement of flowers for her mom. I was impressed with how reasonably priced the flowers were! Deb said she would like to keep them affordable. If you need someone to send flowers to my address is.... oh, Deb knows where I live.

Kalee says the flowers are still beautiful days later!

I took this one for Eugenia Bornemeier...she loves sunflowers.

Deb has various gifts.

Plus a variety of locally made wines.

The Heartland Flooring Center was a beehive of activity with their price slashing sales. We snuck in and took a few pictures, signed up for the drawing for a very cool rug, and then got out of the way! In case you are wondering Georgia Dorr won the area rug.

Thea Bornemeier shops for her new floor.

A shopper hides from the camera.

Kelly Greene helps Liberty make a birthday cake crown at the Elmwood Library.

Jackson works on his crown.

Liberty is loving making a birthday cake crown.

Raynee is gluing her crown together.

The kids got to decorate their own cupcake birthday cake.

Two St. Bernards were loving being in town for the celebration.

The apartment lawn is looking very lovely!

Main street is looking so nice! We'll have to keep this up!
The American Exchange Bank has undergone a transformation, too. We were quite impressed with the change!

While Bits and Pieces has downsized so the south half of the store can be remodeled you can still find lots of bargains on the north side. And if you get tired of shopping you can take a rest on the newly painted bench in front of the story. Several of these benches were orginally donated by the Lions Club. Since the club has disbanded the benches were donated to the businesses that they sat in front of..anyway, that's the story I was told. I was asked to paint this one for the 125th birthday celebration. (I couldn't stop there, then I painted our mailbox. I'll save that one for next week.)

It is certainly painted up for a party!

Good Neighbors, Good Friends, Good Times, Good Life. Welcome to Our World.

Lou and Kalee try out the bench. They said it works just fine!

Lou was all over town Saturday. As the main organizer of this event he wanted to see all of the sites!

We ran into Lou everywhere!

And always with a smile.

The Quilt show at the Methodist Church was very impressive. Most quilts were made by Mickie Clements and Linda Roeber.

The ceremony in the park included dedication of the two new trees donated by Marie Gregoire and Tom Burtch, the filling of the time capsule, and the presentation of two items for the museum.

Jordan Bowman and Tyler Jones were representing the FBLA and were intereviewded by a reporter for Channel 10/11. The FBLA organized the time capsule that will be sealed for 25 years.

One of the trees donated. They will be decorated every year instead of the big tree.

Lou and Marie prepare for the service.

Lou Allgayer tells about the trees.

The signs that are donated. They originally were in a school but were being thrown away. They are the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
The festivities in the park included Minute to Win It games, a Petting Zoo, and lunch!

Lexi Bacon prepares for the balloon/cup game.

Shay is also getting ready. They blew up balloons and used the air to blow the cups off of the table.

Shake, shake, shake it, girl!

Where's my hat?

I'm not peeking..I can do this...

See, told you so!

This might have been the oldest participant on Saturday. I didn't catch her name but when we were at the quilt exhibit she had a few interesting stories for me.

Hanna was concentrating so hard at threading this needle. I couldn't do it but she could!

In fact, she threaded 10 of them.

Hayley and Shay wait their turn to play a game.

Ariel thought the cupcakes were yummy!

The hair painting was the best part!

Levi's hair was pretty bright! It helps that he was so blond.

The cheerleaders were painting hair to raise money for the spirit squad.

Kayleigh and Jennifer were selling raffle tickets for a Husker quilt.

Rick Clements bought his tickets from Sheridan and Breann.

Veronica Wagner from Lincoln won the quilt. Funny, I was sure I was going to win.

The kids had to place the hat on their heads with their eyes shut...the hats are attached to a fishing pole.

Drake feeds the ponies...again and again. They loved Drake.

Atticus thinks the pigs are cute.

Haylee likes the ponies.

Emily shows off her goat.

Just let me sleep! Or at least scratch behind my ears.

Raynee made friends with a parakeet.

Pet the bunny?

Shannon Josoff was responsible for the kids games in the park. The Minute to Win It games were a big hit and so were the races!

Ready, Set, Go!

Steve? Who's Steve? These girls were practicing for the foot race.

No one went away hungry.

The people just kept coming! Over 200 were served.

Dan Brown smoked the 75 lbs of pork from the Elmwood Meat Plant for the event. And it was great! A big thanks to Dan and the Elmwood Meat Plant!

They're off!

Cooper Cronk and Jordyn Campbell won their category for the bike races.

The winners all got medals!

That's where my participation in the Birthday Celebration ended and I went on to some family activities. The rest of the Elmwood celebration included Legion Baseball games, an Alumni banquet, and dinner/dancing at the Josoff's Social Hall. If anyone has pictures from these events please send them to me and I will put them in the newsletter next week!

Memorial Day Services were held in the Elmwood Cemetary Monday.

It started with a march to the cemetary following the veterans carrying the flags.

Daisy Scout 44563 and Boy Scout Troop 360 participated in the ceremony. They led everyone in the pledge of allegiance and also placed wreaths on the memorial.

Rick Clements welcomed the crowd.

This guy listened and waved his flag.

Mr. Michael Pauly, MSgt, USAF Retired, gave the Memorial Day Address.

Derek Vogt read the Gettysburg Address. Alyssa Brown read General Logan's Order No. 11.

Tucker and Marissa Oehlerking represented the generations of kids that came before them to this ceremony. It was evident that this is a tradition with many families. Grandparents, mothers, fathers, kids, and grandkids were all here for the ceremony. They came when they were children because their parents made them. They come back now because they know how important it is for their kids to know this tradition. To remember those who came before us. Those who fought so we could be here today on the top of a hill in a cemetary on a windy May day...to remember.

Rob Clements played the Battle Hymn of the Republic. He also played Taps. Bruce Pratt played Echo Taps from far off in the cemetary. It was chilling.

The flags flew in the wind with vigor and strength.

The 21 gun salute woke up some of the babies but also was a sobering moment for the adults who understood the meaning.

The G.A.R. Soldier stands tall.

The veterans' graves were decorated for the day with flags.

The older tombstones make us wonder about the lives of those who lay here.

STEVE!!!

Something was up Saturday in the park at the party. Why was everyone wearing shirts that had a picture of a cute little dog on it and the word, “Steve”? It started out with one or two kids…then three…then 10…then the adults were wearing the shirts. Where were they coming from? Did someone lose their dog? Why is Rob Clements wearing the shirt? Because he wants you to ask him “Why?” So I did. He was glad to tell me about a project that is the brainchild of Erin Clymer. She would like to see the Elmwood Park improved so she is starting a campaign to raise money for the Park Improvement Project. The current park is very nice but there is always room for improvement. The new park will be called Knights’ Kingdom…where the villagers play. She is in the early stages of putting together her team so if you are interested contact Erin at erinclymer@hotmail.com. So, who is Steve you ask? Steve is Erin’s dog and isn’t he cute? He got your attention didn’t he? That was what he was designed to do! There will be much more about this project in the future so stay tuned!
