The “One Book One Nebraska” this year is the WWII drama, “The Long March Home.”

This story is about three childhood friends from Alabama who find themselves serving in the Philippines in 1941 and subsequently trying to survive the Bataan Death March. The story was co-written by Nebraska author Tosca Lee.

Library 022025

Ms. Lee visited our library book club on Monday January 27. She discussed the book, her research about the Pacific Theater and her overall writing process. Those in attendance were fascinated by what she had to share and a good time was had by all!

Happy February!
I happened to get a sneak peak of the Children's Literature exhibit, and it is FANTASTIC!! My youngest daughter tried out several interactive exhibits with our exhibit chair, Randeen VanDyne, and she agrees that kids of any age will love experiencing the beauty of our world through books (and snuggling in a tent)!!

Stay warm!

Briese Encourages Nebraskans to Search for Unclaimed Property

(Lincoln, NE) Nebraska Treasurer Tom Briese today encouraged Nebraskans to observe Unclaimed Property Day on February 1st by searching www.NebraskaLostCash.gov to see if they have cash or other valuables waiting for them. Briese also said that Nebraskans who have lived in other states should check www.MissingMoney.com as it is a nationwide database The search only takes a moment and is totally free.

More than 33 million people in the United States has some sort of unclaimed property, which could be financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for several years. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and uncashed checks. The State Treasurer’s Office is the custodian of unclaimed funds remitted by a business, government, or any other legal or commercial entity operating in the State of Nebraska.

In 2024 the Unclaimed Property Division returned $23,273,956 made up of 19,568 claims. This is a 36% increase over the amount paid in 2023.

“Unclaimed property is your money, and it should be returned to you. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it is free,” Briese said. “I’m proud that my office has returned a record amount of unclaimed property to Nebraskans and I want to see more people get what is rightfully theirs.”

To increase awareness of unclaimed property, the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) has declared February 1st as National Unclaimed Property Day.

About the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators

The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) is comprised of the unclaimed property programs of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as several foreign jurisdictions. Hastings College announces Jackson Scholars program for aspiring artists

Note: For more information, contact Michael Howie at mhowie@hastings.edu or 402.984.9408.

(Hastings, Nebraska) – Hastings College is launching the Jackson Scholars program, a groundbreaking opportunity for aspiring artists to hone their craft and launch their careers. The program, housed within the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC), one of the preeminent art centers in the Midwest, will provide unparalleled support and mentorship to scholarship recipients.

Students selected to the program will receive a full-ride scholarship to Hastings College, including tuition, fees, room and meals for four years. Scholars will also receive professional enrichment opportunities. An initial cohort of four students, current high school seniors, will be selected for the fall of 2025, and the program will grow to 8-10 students annually in the coming years. Additional details can be found at hastings.edu/jacksonscholars.

“This is an incredible opportunity for art majors to receive a full-ride scholarship to Hastings College where they will enjoy a four-year residency at the JDAC,” said Dr. Wayne Riggs, vice president for academic affairs. “Students will be able to select a studio and become an apprentice to experienced faculty while building a community and being given opportunities for internships, practicums and other experience.”

The Jackson Scholars program is designed to cultivate artistic talent, foster community engagement and prepare students for successful careers after they graduate from Hastings College.

“The program emphasizes the importance of artistic excellence and professional development, providing scholars with the tools and resources they need to succeed,” said Dr. Brian Corr, associate professor of art and chair of the department. “Enrichment funds will support students as they seek internships, practicums and other experiences, such as conferences, exhibitions and study away opportunities, tailored to each individual’s interests.”

High school seniors interested in applying to be a Jackson Scholar for fall 2025 are encouraged to apply before the March 1 deadline via a link at hastings.edu/jacksonscholars. Students must be interested in majoring in art and demonstrate exceptional artistic potential and a commitment to community engagement. As part of the application process, students will need to submit a portfolio and answer essay-style questions.

Students must also apply and be admitted to Hastings College.

Interviews with finalists for the inaugural class will happen in March, with offers going to those selected happening by April 1.

Funding for the Jackson Scholars program also allows Hastings College to create an artist-in-residence program in the JDAC. This rotating guest artist-in-residence will further enrich JDAC’s creative environment.

About the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center
