After a welcoming by Rick Clements, Master of Ceremonies, Janet Sorensen opened the services with the Star Spangled Banner before Pastor Mark Sheldon gave the invocation.
David Wells, a Civil War Historian, and Joanne Ferguson portraying the "Lady in Black" set the stage for the reading of General Logan's Order No. 11 by Staci Ronhovde, daughter of Tom and Sue Ronhovde, Eagle, Cornhusker Girls' State Representative. David Wells gave the keynote address of "Walking in the Presence of the Past" noting events in the history of the United States in which veterans laid to rest in our cemetery had played a role. During a surprise presentation, David Wells presented 3 record books to Boyd Clements representing the G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum. The books were from Kenesaw G.A.R. Post 123 which was the Elmwood Post and had recently been discovered and given to the museum in Nebraska City. The books include minutes of Post meetings from January 1898 until 1914. Once transcribed, the books will be on display at the Elmwood G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum - their original home.
Ross Mumford, Cornhusker Boys State Representative, son of Cindy and Tony Mumford of Elmwood gave the traditional reading of the Gettysburg Address.
Rob Clements played a trumpet solo, Battle Hymn of the Republic, as a tribute to his cousin Keith Clements who was killed in action in the Pacific during World War II.
The new flagpoles which had been installed throughout the cemetery during a joint project of the American Legion and Sons of the American Legion were dedicated. Thirty-eight poles flying American flags at half-mast were dedicated in honor of and in memory of family members. Six additional new poles were also noted - those bearing the flags of the five military services and the POW/MIA flag. A plaque made by Glenn Miller noting each of the dedications was on display at the services, and is now at the G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum.
As a final tribute to American Legion Post 247 members who passed away this year, Harvey Neemann and Arley Hill were transferred to Post Everlasting. Family members were present to receive certificates of this transfer. Wreaths were placed at the foot of the G.A.R. Monument by American Legion Post 247, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Cub Scout Troop 360 in memory of fallen comrades before Janet Sorensen lead those gathered in the singing of God Bless America.
SGT Jase Blunt, U.S. Army, assisted by Kevin Huxhold, folded the American flag he had flown in Iraq and presented it to American Legion Post 247 along with a certificate of authenticity which states in part that the "flag was flown in the face of the enemy, illuminated in the darkest night by the light of justice" and that it "proudly bore steadfast witness to the dawning of a new era of freedom for those who had never known it, bravely led by those who would die for it." The flag and certificate will now reside at the G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum.
The services concluded with the traditional 3-volley Salute to the Dead followed by Taps and Echo Taps played by Rob Clements and Bruce Pratt, and the Benediction by Pastor Mark Sheldon.
Luncheon at the Community Center was attended by 125, many of whom visited the G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum later in the afternoon. American Legion Post 247 and the Sons of the American Legion would like to thank everyone who attended the services and a special thank you to those who helped out in so many ways in preparation for the event.
But it's really hot outside!!!
What a perfect night for a water fight!
The Elmwood Fire Department met the Murdock Fire Department and battled it out in a water fight by the park. The goal was to see who could move the bucket to their opponent's side. Considering the temperature Monday night anyone who got wet is the winner!

Father's Day = Family & Fishing
There are many ways to celebrate Father's Day but one of the most popular is by getting the family together and going fishing. I can tell it's the most popular because while we were doing it I noticed many other families also doing it. Vince's boys and their families came over for the day. Among the group was the newest member, 2 month old Zachary Anderson. His proud sister, Emma, loves to show him off.

Weeping Water lake is really cool!
We've been doing quite a bit of fishing at the Weeping Water lake lately. The bridges allow you to cross the lake and also to cross the creek to get to the swimming pool. Joe and his friend, Alexander, love to fish here.
Pep Rally for Marti!!
Wednesday night the friends and family of Marti Ita came together at the local Legion Baseball game between the EM Knights vs Arlington. The Creighton Bluejays Softball pitchers came and helped raised money by selling chances to hit their pitches. The Omaha Royals mascot came and met everyone. Herman of Herman's House of Nuts also made some friends. Mr. Brothers took his turn in the dunk tank and so did Ashley Byer. There was a large sign for people to write their prayers and messages to Marti. Marti is still at Creighton University. So what's that new building next to the skating rink?
Many people ask me that very question. I asked Dan Spaulding, the man who keeps Elmwood running, early on in the construction process just what they were doing next door. They are finally getting around to replacing the city maintenance building. Dan will be able to store the lawn mower, snow removal vehicles, and whatever else he needs in that building. It won't leak, the snow won't blow through the cracks, and it looks a lot bigger, too!
A couple times a week the city park becomes home to a group of civilian soldiers at boot camp. Annette Eggert leads the group Wednesday nights, Friday mornings, and Saturday mornings. I've done it myself and it is a workout. You would not believe how good you feel when you are done. You feel alive and you feel every muscle you forgot you had. There will be no pictures of boot camp...you just have to go and try it out for yourself.
The city park is also a great place for kids. Imagine that! The kids have a great time on the equipment and also at the drinking fountain.
City Wide Clean Up Day a Success!
Truck after truck after trailer after trailer appeared Saturday morning to bring junk to be hauled away. I know we got rid of a couple couches and a lot of junk that had been piling up in the yard. Thanks to everyone who helped clean up Elmwood!
Happy Birthday, Rebekah!
Summer is a busy time but Rebekah's friends made time for her birthday. Rebekah Pratt, daughter of Bruce and Peg, turned 11 years old. We are usually closed on Saturday mornings during the summer but we'll gladly open if you have a party request! Rebekah's brother, Jon, tried out the new Simpson Bowling game and made high score!

We had quite the fun group Saturday night. We skated on the new floor and it was awesome! We colored, played games, shot pool, and played dodgeball. Not to mention dancing. There was a little something for everyone.
Merl and Deb Merchant opened the Personal Touch in a building behind their store, Specialized Computer Solutions. They have a little bit of everything and are planning on getting more. Stop in and say "Hi" and see what they have to offer.

For those of us who like to fish this will be a fun event. Bring your kids! Carp-O-Rama Scheduled for June 27 at Pawnee SRA, Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. - Carp fishing is a fun, exciting way to bag a meal. The fish are in waters all across Nebraska and anglers may catch and keep as many as they want.
Anglers and families interested in learning all aspects of carp fishing may attend Carp-O-Rama on June 27 at Pawnee State Recreation Area (SRA), according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
The free event will take place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on the east side of the lake, near the boat ramp. Pawnee SRA is located 3 miles northwest of Emerald in Lancaster County.
Carp is an excellent fish for beginning anglers to pursue because they are plentiful statewide and the required equipment is relatively simple. The strong-fighting fish also is not restricted by bag, possession limits or size limits.
How-to carp fishing seminars by Commission fisheries outreach program manager Daryl Bauer will be held throughout the day. Carp caught by anglers will be used in outdoor personality Dick Turpin's demonstrations on cleaning, preparing and cooking the fish. The cooked fish then will be served as a free lunch. Prize drawings will be held for children age 15 and younger.
"Carp actually are one of the smartest fish that swim in our waters and can be a worthy challenge for the best of anglers," Bauer said. "To be consistently successful, anglers need to learn some of the tricks and tips specifically for carp. That is what Carp-O-Rama is all about. It will be a chance to learn some new things, catch some fish, eat some fish, and have a good time with a bunch of other folks doing the same thing."
Carp-O-Rama also is a chance to thin an abundant carp population at Pawnee. Anglers may then take their new-found skills to other waters and further reduce the numbers of this nongame fish that muddies water and uproots plants with its aggressive feeding activities.
"Common carp are an exotic species that were introduced to North America a long time ago," Bauer said. "We would be better off without them and as fisheries managers we will continue to eliminate them whenever possible. But, the fact is, they are here to stay and when life gives you lemons, you might as well make lemonade."
A park entry permit is required of all vehicles entering Pawnee SRA. A fishing license is required of anglers age 16 and older. Both permits may be purchased at the park.
The tentative Carp-O-Rama schedule:
8 a.m. - information tent opens; 8:30 a.m. - how-to fishing seminar; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. - fish cleaning demonstrations; 9:30 a.m. - how-to fishing seminar; 10:30 a.m. - how-to fishing seminar; 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. - fish preparation demonstrations; 11 a.m.-1 p.m. - fish cooking demonstrations; 11 a.m. - prize drawings commence until all are gone; 11:30 a.m. - fish lunch served, continues until 1 p.m. or fish is gone; 12:30 p.m. - how-to fishing seminar
