Meet Roger. Oh, you have seen him in town, maybe walking down the sidewalk to the community center for lunch in the past. Or maybe to the gas station.

Well, Roger, like anyone getting older and doesn't get around as well anymore.

BUT, where there is a will there is a way!!

 Don't tell Roger he can't do anything, he will just hope on his riding lawn mower and bring his walker with him. I just hope that I am that independent and adaptable when I get to be his age.  We can all learn something from him.

Fall Festival 2020

Sunday, October 11th

Something NEW is coming to Elmwood. The Fall Festival in the park, complete with a Chili Cookoff, make a ScareCrow Workshop, and much more. Why you might say? Well, we wish we could say we just LOVE having fun in Elmwood. BUT it's much more serious than that.

Remember the Spring toys and Geometric Dome in the park? The ones we removed to build the new playground? It's time to BRING THEM BACK. But we need to raise funds for the cement and six-foot "fall zone" of wood chips around them. Yes, I know they were on grass before, but the state regulations now mandate that any renovated parks have to follow the "new guidelines."

Starting at 1:00 pm come join the fun and games at the park. At 3:00 pm the Chili Cookoff begins.

For only $5.00 you can sample all the chili and have the honor of being a judge.

While waiting for the Chili Cookoff make a scarecrow!! Only $10 for a lifesize scarecrow to decorate your front porch.

What FUN. But Make SURE you reserve your scarecrow kit ahead of time so there is enough. Let us know at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com or sign up at the Farmers Market with any vendor.

Fall has arrived and fall-themed food (pies, etc)

 The weather is a little "chili", (get it, see above) but the coffee is hot and fresh at the Farmers Market and there was even biscotti to go with it,...I promise to make more, since it was popular last week. 

The Farmers Market will continue as long as people come out and support the vendors. 

 Well, it really depends on the weather and how many vendors continue to set up on Saturday mornings. 

Do you have pumpkins, gourds, or fall wreaths? 

Maybe you have corn stalks for decorating, baked pies, and apples??

Wear your fall hoodies, sell hot chocolate, apple cider, and maybe even have a special Halloween weekend edition with special "Trunk N' Treat" for the kids.

The last Monday of the month dinners are BACK!!

You have no idea how happy it made me to come inside, sans mask, and see confident people hungry for Lasagne and conversation. 

For only $10 you got homemade lasagna, (or spaghetti) a wonderful salad, and dessert.  It was delicious.

The Elmwood Community Center is an independent agency that relies on the income from the lunch crowd, the Monday night out community dinners, occasional facility rentals, and donations from the community to keep the lights on.

During this challenging time of COVID-19, we have continued to provide lunches that have been available for carryout and delivery with most being delivered. We are looking for creative ways to boost our income so we can keep the doors open.

The Community Center is now operating at somewhat "normal" capacity. 

The movie Second Hand Lions will be shown on Thursday, September 24th.

This would be a great opportunity for homeschoolers and learn at home families to take a break and visit the Community Center for lunch and a fun movie. 

Husker Football

The return of Normalcy. Normal is sort of returning. Husker football is going to be starting up again. Very few fans in the stadium, but here is the schedule. Make sure to check back for the score.

Join our Facebook group and stay up to date on who will be showcasing their produce, baked goods, and other items. Ask if anyone is bringing apples, pies, pumpkins.

New Elmwood Maintenance Manager

Jeff Cymer is the new Village of Elmwood Maintenance manager, he has already sent me photos while he is out doing his job and for that, I am VERY thankful. The future is bright and looking up. The position requires me to physically be in town M-F 6:30 am - 3:00 pm (approx) & Sat/Sun an hour each to check the water tower & treatment plant.

Elmwood Learning  & Cultural Center

Business and Commercial Space for rent! These offices are fully furnished and share common space for meetings and a kitchenette area.

The above office is only $400/month, if you know of someone who would like to relocate their office between Omaha and Lincoln this is IDEAL

The second office is slightly larger and has a window. This office space is renting for $600/month.

As New Elmwood Learning and Cultural Center grows it will serve as the following...

• Elmwood Museum space - rotating exhibits from the G.A.R Veterans Museum, Bess Streeter Aldrich Museum, Elmwood history

Objective: To serve as a learning and cultural arts center for Elmwood while providing long-term preservation of the community’s historical artifacts with special emphasis on the life and works of Bess Streeter Aldrich and the Grand Army of the Republic Veterans’ Hall.

Owners: Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation and American Legion Post #247 (eventually, a community foundation will be formed)

Background: The Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation and G.A.R. Veterans Museum have developed strategies to assure their long-term status in the community. A conversation with architect Rick Hawks about the possible construction of a new building located on the empty lot next to the G.A.R. Hall ultimately resulted in a suggestion to look at the Prairie Solutions Technology building which was purchased in August 2020.

Future Goals for the Building

• Phase I—Raise Funds for the Building, Operating the Existing Building “As Is” with Minimalodifications (Handicap Accessibility)
• Phase II—Develop plans for Renovation of the Storage Space in the Back to Accommodate Exhibits related to Elmwood’s History, Bess Streeter Aldrich, G.A.R. Hall, and a Genealogy Research Space
• Phase III—Eliminate the Back Office and Merge with Existing Board Room to Create Larger Board Room/Classroom (Approximately 20 students at tables and/or 40 students with theater seating)

Take It Or Leave It Pantry

The free pantry is here to serve our community. It is for neighbors helping neighbors. Take what you need or leave what you can.

Those who wish to contribute may do so at their discretion when convenient.  If the box if full please bring your items back later. So what should you contribute? During this coronavirus situation, there will be an increased need for healthy snack items for kids. Obviously items like toilet paper, sanitizer may be needed by many. 

Please avoid harsh strong-smelling chemicals that may transfer to food items. 

Here are some ideas that may be useful:

• Pasta
• Canned or boxed pasta (macaroni & cheese is popular)
• Canned soup
• Granola bars
• Fruit snacks
• Dry pasta
• Spaghetti sauce
• Dry soup mixes
• Canned meat (chicken, tuna etc)
• Boxed prepared meal kits (hamburger helper etc)

Red Cross blood donors have new opportunity to help patients fighting COVID-19
Donors needed this fall to maintain blood supply amid an ongoing pandemic

SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 — Plasma from whole blood donations made through the American Red Cross that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood now to help ensure coronavirus patients and others who depend on transfusions have needed blood products this fall.

In April, the Red Cross began collecting COVID-19 convalescent plasma from previously diagnosed individuals, who could only give at one of approximately 170 Red Cross blood donation centers across the country. Convalescent plasma contains COVID-19 antibodies that may help the most critical patients actively fighting this virus. Now, whole blood donations made at any Red Cross blood drive or blood donation center could be helpful in this effort.

“Donations that come back positive for COVID-19 antibodies now undergo secondary testing to confirm antibody results, and that enables the Red Cross to then potentially use the plasma from those donations for COVID-19 patients,” said Dr. Erin Goodhue, executive medical director of direct patient care with the Red Cross Biomedical Services. “With approximately 2% of the U.S. population testing positive for COVID-19 antibodies, every donation is important to ensure patients with coronavirus have access to every treatment option available to them.”

The Red Cross encourages eligible individuals to schedule an appointment, download the free Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

About antibody testing
Antibody testing may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual experienced COVID-19 symptoms. Donations are tested using samples pulled at the time of donation and sent to a testing laboratory where they will also undergo routine infectious disease testing.

COVID-19 antibody test results will be available within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity. The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test.

Important COVID-19 information for donors
Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings for donors and staff – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask while at the drive, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance.

About blood donation

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

NOW THAT YOU'VE REGISTERED, GET THE FACTS! 

There are really NO EXCUSES for failing to vote.  You have to work that day?  No excuse.  Don't have a babysitter?  No excuse.  You don't want to go out in a crowd?  No excuse.  Do you know that any Nebraska resident who is a LEGALLY REGISTERED VOTER may request an EARLY-VOTING BALLOT APPLICATION, (also known as an 'ABSENTEE' ballot)? You don't even need to have a reason, (or an excuse), for the request! 

One excellent reason for voting by absentee, is the weather.  An ice or snow storm, heavy winds or torrential rains could possibly keep you from physically voting on the actual Election Day.  No worries about that with your mail-in vote either. 

Do you need another good reason for voting by mail? You might get sick and cannot physically go to your polling place.

The following should help you save time:   

• Cass County NE voters may print the Early Voting Ballot Application HERE.  
• OR call your local Election Office and ask for one to be mailed to you.  In Cass County NE, that's 402-296-9309.
• OR in Cass County NE, there is a box located outside the building where you can just pick one up. You may also pick one up at the Election Office inside. 
• The address is 201 Main Street, Plattsmouth, NE, (white building southeast of the flagpole).

Accurately, completely fill out the form.   Include your name, residence address, phone number, mailing address you want the ballot sent to and your signature.  Even if you do the automatic fill-in form online, you still need to SIGN IT after you print it.  Mail it right away or take it to the Cass County NE Election Office and drop it in the box outside on the southwest wall of the building.

 On September 28th ballots will start to be sent out and you should receive yours shortly thereafter.

So get your Early Voting Ballot Application form filled-out now, before the big rush. 

The last day to request an Early Voting Ballot to be mailed to you is October 23rd.

Just do it now.  Election Day will be here before you know it!

Next to the Cass County Election Office door you'll see two sets of forms, one on the right for Voter Registration and on the left, the Early Voting Forms.

After they're filled out and signed, you may take them inside, mail them, or drop them in the 'Ballot Box' around the corner of the building, to the right of the big Election Office sign.
