The 2020 Elmwood Alumni Banquet has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

We will honor both the 2020 Honor Classes and the 2021 Honor Classes at the Banquet next year May 29, 2021. So mark your calendars for next year.

FBLA State Leadership Conference

This year the in-person State Leadership Conference was canceled, and most events did not take place due to virtual obstacles (i.e. testing fairness/accessibility virtually, sequestered presentations, etc.) The only events that were scored were pre-judged events, which included some projects and reports. All other events were canceled (scantron testing, computer application testing, etc.).

On Tuesday, April 21, the Nebraska State Officer Team held a short virtual awards program to announce the 1st-8th place winners for those projects that were pre-judged. Elmwood-Murdock FBLA had several individuals and teams place in the top eight, of which nine students placed in the top three, qualifying them for nationals.

Below is a listing of the top eight winners for those events that were judged this year. If you are interested in viewing the virtual awards ceremony hosted by the state officers.

The current plan is to hold a virtual national conference at the end of June, but we know very little information about that at this time. (originally nationals was to be held in Salt Lake City, UT)

Hey Parents!

I know it’s inconvenient to have the library stacks unavailable for browsing right now, but guess what. We have pre-bundled picture book collections ready for your young reader!

 Dogs, Princesses, Trains and more await you at the Elmwood Public Library. We’re open 12pm-2pm Monday through Friday and 10am-12pm on Saturdays for pick-ups. And don’t forget, we have a LIVE Storytime on our Facebook page each Thursday at 11am!

It's just $10.00. Really. When you are visiting stop by and find out how to become a member. 

Access digital media! Audiobooks, eBooks, magazines! There's a new library app called, "Libby" to help you with all of your things. Works much easier than OverDrive! Try it out on your phone, computer or other device today!

Take It Or Leave It Pantry

The activity at the Elmwood Take-it-or-Leave food pantry is bustling.  Beth Philson recently took the opportunity of it being almost empty to give it a good cleaning and sanitizing. Please stop by and donate extra food and supplies. It is being used and is a good way for people to get food without the "stigma" of facing someone in person.

The free pantry is here to serve our community. It is for neighbors helping neighbors. 

Those who wish to contribute may do so at their discretion when convenient. Take what you need or leave what you can. If the box if full please bring your items back later. So what should you contribute? During this coronavirus situation, there will be an increased need for healthy snack items for kids. Obviously items like toilet paper, sanitizer may be needed by many. 

Please avoid harsh strong-smelling chemicals that may transfer to food items. 

Here are some ideas that may be useful:

• Pasta
• Canned pasta (macaroni & cheese is popular)
• Canned soup
• Granola bars
• Fruit snacks
• Dry pasta
• Spaghetti sauce
• Dry soup mixes
• Canned meat (chicken, tuna etc)
• Boxed prepared meal kits (hamburger helper etc)

The 24-hour pantry is located on the west side of the Village office on west C Street, behind Bits N Pieces and at the entrance of the Elmwood Meat Plant.

The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall.

The EM Cheer Squad Annual Plant Sale is still happening!

It's just going to look a little different this year than in previous years.

Unfortunately, due to the current Directed Health Initiative, we can only offer pre-order sales and will not have any plants available to purchase during the pick-up times.

The Cheer Squad will have curbside pickup on the following dates and times at the garage next to the Chiro Office in Elmwood:

You will simply pull up, we will get your name, load your order into your car and you will be on your way!

National Coronavirus Update: Question and Answers

American Exchange Bank will limit lobby & office access at our Elmwood and Eagle locations to “by appointment” only as a precautionary measure beginning today.

We ask that you use our drive-through lanes, ATM machines, and Online Banking systems for standard banking business during this time. We will also accept appointments by phone for business requiring lobby access or in-office visits.

 This temporary restriction is made out of an abundance of caution in response to a Directed Health Measure issued by Governor Pete Ricketts last week affecting Cass, Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties. We simply wish to do anything we can to help prevent the potential spread of the virus over the coming weeks. These changes will remain in place until April 30th, coinciding with the Governor’s guidance.

Please be assured we remain ready to serve ALL of your banking needs; just in a slightly different way for now. If you or someone you know requires special accommodations to conduct banking business during this time, please let us know and we will help any way we can.

Important Public Announcement
From The Board of Directors of The Lofte Community Theatre:

In an effort to do our part to help flatten the curve of COVID-19, The Lofte Community Theatre will be closed to the public until further notice. Only essential personnel will be allowed in the building during this time.

This means the following changes to our upcoming events and productions:

An Evening With Kaylynn Sahs on March 28 has been canceled. The box office has contacted current ticket holders.
Our opening production, Office Hours, will not take place on April 17-19 and 23-26.
The rest of our season is being re-evaluated as this situation continues to evolve.

We are greatly saddened to have to make these decisions but, the safety and well-being of the community that is the heart of our theatre must come first.

We ask for your patience as we work through this difficult situation. We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation and make any additional adjustments as necessary. Updates on this evolving situation will be made via email, Lofte.org, and social media.

We look forward to having the barn back open and having our Lofte Community together again. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.

Fortenberry: Nebraska Leads Nation in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loans Approved, Per Capita

If you want to talk to Congressman Fortenberry about why Nebraska has been so successful in meeting the needs of small businesses during the coronavirus crisis, please reach out.

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (NE-1) is the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Ag Subcommittee and Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.

The Paycheck Protection Program was an important part of the massive $2.3 trillion bill recently passed by Congress to protect our health, protect individuals and families, and protect our economy. As a critical component of that effort, the PPP enabled small businesses to take out a loan in order to keep their employees on the payroll and pay other expenses. If an employer avoided layoffs during an eight-week period, a significant portion of the loan would be forgiven.

We learned something yesterday: Nebraska ranks number one in the nation in the number of PPP loans approved, per capita. A reporter from Reuters called to ask me why. The first thing I told him was, “Nebraskans know how to plow.” A number of factors aligned. Our financial institutions are community-oriented: The banker knows the farmer, the banker knows the barber, the banker knows the café owner. And we have a number of small business associations that quickly realized that the PPP could be a lifesaver for them. By doing a number of telephone town halls with these associations, the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the banking community, word got out quickly. Then the entrepreneurial spirit of Nebraska kicked into high gear as a lot of people got busy.
