I heard from Nate Ohlrich, webmaster for a Nebraska "Huskers" football online community called, Husker Spot - Nebraska Football Fan Network". He wanted to let everyone know about this website. This online community of Nebraska football fans has news, videos, pictures, discussion forums, and much more. It's free to join and a great place and resource for Nebraska football fans. Nate tells me that there are Husker fans from Elmwood that are already members of the site - but he would welcome more. So check it out and see if you can connect with fellow Huskers here!

Let’em Roll @ the Wheelchair Games

Our son, Joe, was invited to the Kids Day at the 28th Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Omaha last weekend. Sunday he and I made our way to the Northwest High School track and field area. The site that greeted us was incredible. There were many athletes, most in wheelchairs, competing in the track and field events. Joe was greeted by many volunteers who were eager for the kids to arrive. Joe was the first one and he received the royal treatment. He was registered for the kids day events and given several free gifts such as a bottle filled with water and a fan stuck on top. Considering the heat on Sunday it was a blessing.

Soon the other kids arrived and the games began! About 13 wheelchair adult athletes greeted the kids and told a little about themselves and how they came to be at the games. After the pledge of allegiance the kids were divided into three groups. They all got to try T-ball, archery, and the slalom. Joe did very well at all of the events. He had the best time of everyone in his group in the slalom which is basically an obstacle course that they maneuvered through in their wheelchairs. He hit a triple in T-ball, and two bulls eyes in archery. It was a good day for Joe!

You may have seen the story on the news Sunday but Joe was only briefly seen in the back ground. If you would like to see video clips of the wheelchair games you can find them at under Media. These videos have Joe in them.

The great thing is that Joe started his sixth year at Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp on Monday. He was so pumped for camp! Tuesday the kids at camp are going to the Quest Center to watch the athletes play rugby and basketball. I’m planning on going to…I wouldn’t miss it!

The Hills are Alive with

The Lofte Theater in Manley presents the Sound of Music. There are eight Elmwoodians in this production. Kabrianna Mumford is a regular at the rink and has told me all of her lines. Although this is her first major role it could be the first of a brilliant acting career. I’m told that Kabby is a joy to work with and a little trooper. By the time the play ends over 4000 people will have seen it.

Local talent in the play:
Cynthia Sheldon – Sister Margaretta
Jeff Johnston – Franz
Jill McLaughlin – Novice
Lizzy Pegler – Postulant
Kabrianna Mumford – Gretl
Janet Sorensen – Mother Abbess
Tim Sorensen – Herr Zeller
Katie Schmitt – Novice – (from Murdock)
Samantha Colbert – Liesl (from Weeping Water but an Elmwood Murdock graduate)

I’m sorry!
I need to apologize to anyone that I may have offended last week in my article encouraging people to slow down on the streets of Elmwood. I never intended to imply that all farmers, bus drivers, or kids cruising were speeding up or down D Street. I was just trying to point out that it happens to everyone at one time or another. I have no specific instances of farmers, bus drivers, or kids cruising up or down D Street in an unsafe manner.

Tupperware, Anyone?
Brooke Campbell is Elmwood’s newest Tupperware Lady! She held her first party at the Flying Wheels last week. If you are in need of Tupperware or replacing any of your old Tupperware contact Brooke. I hadn’t seen a Tupperware catalog in years and I was really impressed! If you want to see one or talk to Brooke send me an email and I’ll pass it on to her!

Saturday @ the Rink
Saturday nights at the rink are picking up again! We have changed our venue a bit though. We have been skating for most of the evening and finishing up with Dodge Ball. Birthday parties and dodge ball…a great mix! It has been a lot of fun! We still do a little dancing but right now the kids are more into the dodge ball. We will be closed on Saturday, August 9th because we’ll be at the fair. We will see you there!

Those were the days…need I say anything more?

Take care and have a great week!

Julie Anderson
