United Faith Organization (UFO) Mission Trip to Red Bird Mission

Ten adults and seventeen youth from the Elmwood Christian Church; St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elmwood; and the First United Methodist Church of Waverly traveled to Red Bird Mission in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Kentucky recently for a week-long service project. During their stay, members put roofing on the volunteer quarters at the Mission Work Camp and worked on a local parsonage including painting the walls and ceilings of 13 rooms, hanging ceiling fans, installing a sump pump, installing a new bathroom sink, replacing a portion of the bathroom floor, repairing a water leak, installing window blinds, cleaning out the basement, caulking windows, cutting brush and bushes, painting and repairing a garage, hauling dirt to create a flower garden, and other general repairs.
Recipients of the work projects were extremely appreciative of all the hard work put forth and commented several times on the strong work ethic of the Nebraska youth. The pastor and his wife and other ladies of the congregation treated the group to a delicious meal of home-made chicken and dumplings and other sides as a way of showing their appreciation.
After a very busy, but fulfilling week, the group headed toward Washington DC with a stop at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home near Charlottesville, Virginia, for a tour. They traveled on to Washington DC and completed the day by visiting the National Archives, museums, and monuments in the DC mall area. Following a tour of Arlington National Cemetery and observing the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown on Sunday morning, they attended a very moving Independence Day service at the National Cathedral before boarding the bus and starting home. They arrived home from their 10-day trip weary but with a new appreciation for many of the things previously taken for granted.

Mark your calendars and plan to join in the fun at EPL.

Check out this site - http://www.firstbook.org/whatbook/ - People vote for the book(s) that got them hooked and then choose a state to receive free books - Nebraska was 2nd at last count - so perhaps we need to spread the word to people to vote so we can get some free books given to Nebraska. You can vote every day until it ends, so people should go back to this site daily.
Thanks!
