Thank You, Veterans!
From ancestors who served in the Civil War, World Wars and other conflicts, to fathers and brothers who went away to fight for freedom, to classmates and schoolmates who will be leaving just weeks after graduation, everyone knows someone, loves someone who has fought or will soon be fighting for our American ideals. Some serve as soldiers in combat, others as cooks and clerks, while still others as mechanics and engineers. Memorial Day is a special day that has been set aside to honor those who served and have now passed on. Originally called Decoration Day because flowers and wreaths were placed on the tombs of the honored dead, recognizing and participating in Memorial Day activities is a great way to say thank you to every man and woman whose service preserved the United States as a free nation. However, as true patriotic citizens, we must realize that only one day a year is not sufficient thanks for all that some have given. The challenge set out before us today is to everyday give something because some have already given everything. As Abraham Lincoln expressed at Gettysburg, it is our duty to carry on the work of preserving freedom with as much zeal as our fallen heroes, that in doing so, we can truly honor their lives and memory.
