 Veterans Day Celebration

Once again the Elmwood-Murdock School did a wonderful job in recognizing our communities veterans and teaching our students the importance of Veterans Day and patriotism.

veteransday EMschool 2018 SM

The day started at the high school with a program which included the Elmwood American Legion Post 247 presenting the colors. The National Anthem was played by the high school band and was one of the best renditions I have ever heard them play. The band may be small than in previous years, but the sound is very rich.

I was particularly interested in listening to the high school choir as they have a new choir director Mr. Grinvalds. The choir sang one of my favorite songs for Veterans Day "Flanders Field".

The Oxbow Quilters also presented a Quilt of Valor to Aaron Rhodd who served for six years in the Army including a tour in Afghanistan.

veteransday EMschool 2018 2 SM

The Gretna American Legion Riders were the special guest speakers this year and they taught everyone the importance and meaning behind each fold of the American Flag. I had never heard this before and was truly touched with the meaning behind each fold.

Please share this with your friends and family. This should always be remembered and never forgotten. If you have ever attended a full military honor funeral the significance of the flag presentation is one you will never forget.

My Dad's flag sits on my desk, and my Father-in-law received his military funeral on Memorial Day weekend this year. Thank you to Don Klaumann and the Gretna American Legion Riders for this important presentation.

veteransday EMschool 2018 3 SM

The day continued at the Elmwood-Murdock Elementary where the Junior High Band band played and the Elementary kids sang a patriotic song for their parents and veterans in attendance.

Drake Clements Bags a 16- Point Buck

Where is there to go when your first buck at age 11 is a giant 16-point buck? Really he should just stop now. This beauty was one of the largest buck harvested on the first day of firearms season last Saturday.

To say he was excited was probably an understatement.

Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is NEXT week!!???

HolidayExtravaganza 2018

Where did the time go? Time to plan on attending the biggest celebration in the area, the Holiday Extravaganza the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

There is so much to do, so it's best to plan your day starting off with pancakes at the fire hall.

Santa arrives at 10:00 am so get there early for pancakes and photos with Santa. It's an annual tradition you don't want to miss.

IMG 2025 300

This is a photo of my grandbabies from last year,...just a shameless plug. I can't help it, I LOVE my Grandbabies, and yes, they are TWINS. BUT, as you can see it's the perfect photo opportunity to get pictures with Santa.

Candy Cane Lane

Then head over to Candy Cane Lane at the Community Center to purchase baked goods, cookies and holiday treats.

Hay Rack Ride

The hayrack tour of Elmwood leaves from the G.A.R. Hall and will probably give you historical facts about Elmwood you didn't expect.

If you have little ones that love Spiderman and Disney Princesses then go to The Quonset for lunch and  get photos with superheroes and Princess Photos.

Craft Fair

That doesn't even cover half of what is planned for the day! Did I mention the Elmwood/Murdock Backpack Craft Fair at the Elementary school, or the Living Nativity, balloon artist,

ALL DAY EVENTS

Seriously there is a make and take door hanger class at the Thairapist hair salon, Starry Night parade and soup supper. Invite your friends, invite your family. It's a perfect opportunity for the family to come home and celebrate and spend time together.

Shop local, get your Christmas presents and support small business owners in your community. I know I've gotten a lot of my shopping done early just by stopping by Bits N Pieces, Iron Horse Antique Emporium, and the Craft Fair.

Marvin Knits Hats!!

A LOT of Hats in fact. So many that Ramona was caught giving away his hat collection.

While I was attending the Veterans Day program at the Elmwood-Murdock Elementary I ran into Ramona Oehlerking with a tote of very colorful knitted hats. Of course, I was curious and found out MARVIN had knitted them.

Yes, Marvin Oehlerking is extremely talented and a little "passionate" about his hats. How did it start?

veteransday EMschool 2018 1 SM

Well, last year they went to visit his brother in law in Florida for a week and he had started knitting hats and taught Marvin. This kicked it his new hobby and now he collects yarn (he doesn't need any more yarn I was told) and sometimes makes 2 hats a day.

Yes, you heard right. Calculate that by the number of days in a year and you can see why Ramona was donating them to the school for the kids that come to school without hats. They will also be sent home to needy families. They are so colorful, fun and soft. What a great gift they will always remember.

I didn't count how many were in the tote, but there were dozens! All colors, some with pompoms, some without.

Marvin has made hats for all sizes and even has some very tiny infant hats. Some have been donated to hospitals in the area to the nursery and NICU units.

According to Marvin's wife Ramona, he shows no sign of slowing down.

The hats keep getting churned out and I think it's GREAT!

High School Blood Drive

Join the Elmwood-Murdock FCCLA in our mission to Give more life at the Elmwood Murdock High School Blood Drive on Tuesday, November 27th from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Not only can your one donation help up to 3 patients, but it will also go towards providing the class of 2019 with scholarship money!

Give the gift of life

At this blood drive, the Red Cross will have a FREE t-shirt while they last!

All blood drives in Elmwood and Murdock are set up with enough days between drives that you can donate at both.

Blood is desperately needed at this time. There is a critical shortage due in part to Hurricane Michael.

The need will not diminish especially with winter weather leading to increased accidents. Please consider helping out. If you need another reason why to donate, please watch the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_KWUxff_cg

We can work with you today in setting up an appointment and what time would work best for you, please call the school at 402-867-2341 or register for an appointment online at https://www.redcrossblood.org/. Of course, walk-ins are always welcome!

Elmwood Village News

We have been getting questions on who won seats on the Village Board. Below are the results from the Cass County Election Board.

46127908 302904383743872 8815356032134938624 n

The write-in candidate winner takes two weeks to validate. Yes, we are impatient to hear, I know of one candidate who is anxiously awaiting the news.

Rob Clements was elected to the State Legislature for District 2 receiving 57 percent of the votes, including winning Plattsmouth.

Congratulation Rob! We are proud to have you represent District 2 and Elmwood in the State Legislature.

elmwoodelection 2018 SM This photo was taken at the watch party on Tuesday as the first official results were posted around 10:00 pm. What a great photo of Senator Clements and his grandson. You can't read the screen but each bar represents Rob being ahead in EVERY voting district and county. It was unanimous.

We don't have election watch parties in Elmwood too often so this was a uniques experience and a lot of fun. Members of the Clements family and friends from across Nebraska came to watch and be a part of the festivities.

The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall.

Elmwood FoodPantry

The items in it are FREE for those who are needy, don't have food in their cabinets and need just a little something to get them by till the next day. Various people donate items to put in the cupboard, and they notice that several items do disappear.

Spread the news. Stop by and put something in when you come back from grocery shopping. If you know a family or anyone struggling, let them know this resource is available in town.

What can you donate, what may you find?

Generally, canned vegetables and proteins, personal care items, and paper goods. Kid-friendly non-perishables, crayons, and school supplies are perfect, even travel soap and personal hygiene items are welcome.

Work on N-63 Alvo North Realignment

March 15, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work is scheduled to continue the week of March 19 on N-63, between Alvo and I-80, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Knife River, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa has the $11,758,926 contract. Work will include realignment of N‑63, culverts and box culverts, and wetland mitigation. This will be the second of two phases of work.

During this phase, N-63 will be closed to traffic from Reference Post 4+20 (Alvo) to Reference Post 9+68 (Church Road). A marked detour will be in place along I-80 to N-66 to N-50 to US-34 for southbound traffic and along US-34 to N-50 to N-66 to I-80 for northbound traffic. This portion of the project is anticipated to be completed in November 2018.

The Department’s project manager is Jesse De Los Santos of Lincoln. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through work zones and along detours.
