Did you see Santa in Elmwood? He was here and greeting over 100 kids at the Elmwood Firehall from young to old. I'm being indulgent here, but these are my Grandbabies and their first visit to Santa. People also shopped at Bits N Pieces which supports our local community in many ways. If you need Christmas decorations head over there. You need stockings, ornaments, clothing, purses, frames, greeting cards etc.
The day was packed with activities opening with the Pancake breakfast to the Soup Supper at the Community Center. The Craft Fair gave an opportunity for people to buy local and support small businesses.
The Starry Night Parade was fantastic as always, it gets bigger and bigger every year and my favorite part is seeing Susie Vogler and her miniature horses. She did not disappoint this year either. Here is a video of the parade, it shows every entry, but isn't as long as the entire parade.
Operation Santa
The Elmwood Giving Tree is located in the foyer of the Clements and Drevo Law and Insurance offices on Main Street. Tags are on the tree and ready to be chosen for shopping. There are 28 tags this year please stop by, take a tag and shop for a child.
It's sponsored by the Christian Church. It is for the kids of area families. Each year the school determines who the letters go to and the families send their wish lists to Kris Schrader.
Each child has a tag on the tree. No names, just boy or girl, and age with the items they asked for. Requests are wide-ranging.... clothes, gift cards, games, toys, etc.
The gifts are to be returned by December 13 (unwrapped) to the insurance office. If you have any questions you can ask Penny Richter can answer any questions (Families will pick up their gifts on December 16 at the church.
Elmwood Park Ribbon Cutting
The park officially opened with a red ribbon gala that was attended by a huge crowd. It was so much fun to watch the kids running around and playing. Thank you to Marie Gregoire for organizing the opening and being the emcee.
There is the next generation "hamster wheel" at the park. If you remember the old hamster wheel and how much fun it was then you should try out the spinning tulips and spinning cage. I don't know what the official name of it is, I'm sure Julie knows. Next week I'll show you it's NOT just for kids.

16th Annual Short Story Contest
Start thinking of ideas for the 16th Annual Bess Streeter Aldrich short story contest.
The goal is to generate a fictional short story that is written in the wholesome spirit displayed by Bess Streeter Aldrich in her works while incorporating a theme that focuses on Nebraska’s economy, history, cultural diversity, and/or geography (past, present, and/or future).
Writers are encouraged to focus on historical and/or realistic topics. This year the Aldrich Foundation is paying tribute to Mrs. Aldrich’s novel The Rim of the Prairie and believe it would be an excellent resource.

Elmwood Village Board Special Election
Meet the Candidates: Over the course of the next three weeks, I will post information about each candidate running for the Elmwood Village Board. Additional candidates are welcome to submit their information to the Elmwood News by emailing me at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com
Kathy (Taylor) Goerlitz
I was born in New York City and lived in Manhattan until I was 16. My family moved upstate to Monroe, NY, located in Orange County, which is about an hour North of the city. I have been married twice and have two sons; Curt Taylor of Harriman, NY and Charles Taylor of Denver, CO. I have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The first phase of my professional career was spent at Frontier Communications in Monroe, NY. After 22 years, I retired and moved to Maine where my husband and I owned a summer home. We purchased a home and lived in Dexter, Maine, about 8 miles from our summer place. The second phase of my professional career was spent working for Wal-Mart in Palmyra, Maine. I worked there for 17 years before retiring again.
My years of public service began in Monroe, NY, when I joined the Monroe Volunteer Ambulance Corps. I am a lifetime member and have served for nearly 51 years, 28 of which were in active service. I responded to over 2,500 calls during my active tenure. I led the organization as Chief Dispatcher and then later Vice President and President.
I further served my community on the Mombasha Fire Company, also in Monroe, NY, as the Treasurer, Vice President, and President. I earned lifetime membership from this organization as well, and my active tenure was 32 years.
While living in Maine, my husband and I were active members of the Kiwanis Club. I served the Town of Dexter on the planning board for many years, as well. I ran for and was elected to the Mayo Regional Hospital board in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. I served on this board for 10 years.
My husband passed away in Maine in 2010. In 2015, I decided to sell my property in Maine and move to Nebraska. I arrived in July of 2016 and moved in with my sister, Maggie Smith. I lived with her until recently, when I moved into the apartments on Main St. In Nebraska, I am closer to my son and grandchildren in Denver. I enjoy spending time with my niece, Allison Meister, and her family.
I look forward to serving the community of Elmwood if given the opportunity to serve on its board. I bring a wealth of experience in public service and can help lead the board into the future.
Brandon Collins
I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up south of Greenwood where I learned to appreciate the value of living in a small town. I moved to Lincoln to attend college but continued to come to Elmwood to go to the roller rink, where I met my future wife, Mikaela Shrader. I moved to Elmwood in 2008.
While living in Lincoln was convenient, I missed the laid-back nature of a small town.Since moving to Elmwood, I have served as treasurer for the Elmwood Murdock Merchants Association and am currently on the board of the Elmwood Public Library. I plan on living in Elmwood for a very long time as I have loved living here for the past nine years and want my daughters Sophie (4) and Hadley (2) to grow up here. I could not imagine living anywhere else.
I graduated from Southeast Community College in the summer of 2006 with an Associates Degree in Business Administration that focused on Accounting. I pursued my Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration from Bellevue University and graduated in the winter of 2008.
My professional life has been spent in the accounting/finance field, most recently with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as the Business Manager for the Regional Centers located in Lincoln, Norfolk, and Hastings.
The nine years working for the state of Nebraska has taught me numerous skills I feel can help me be an efficient trustee for the Village of Elmwood. I am competent at setting and monitoring a budget; and I also have an open mind, which will serve me well because I understand the importance of listening to others and making decisions based on research and community consensus. I also see this as a great opportunity to meet more people in the community and to continue to make Elmwood a great place to raise a family.
Trent Shrader
When I moved to Manhattan, KS to attend Kansas State University in 2008, I was sure that I would find an exciting and improved lifestyle away from small-town Nebraska. True to my expectations, I made many friends, learned a great deal, and grew as a person during my 3 years as an undergraduate. However, I didn’t find a new home. I got married to my incredible wife Karen, who grew up in Murdock, in 2012. We came back to Nebraska for the wedding. Yet I still was not convinced that my future lay back in Elmwood. When I was accepted into veterinary school at KSU, I was confident that four more years in Kansas would make it feel more like home.
It wasn’t until Karen and I had our first son, Landon James, that I started to realize what I owed this small village. As many of you reading this may be aware, Landon was born with a terminal brain disease that caused severe seizures during his entire life. He passed away in 2014, at 14 months old. During those very difficult months, the Village of Elmwood put my family on its collective shoulders and helped us cherish the moments we had with our son and let him live with dignity. Not only did the community give their time and resources generously, but they gave us hope, which was in short supply during those days.
Reflecting on my own challenges during Landon’s life, I realize that every aspect of my character that helped us survive were traits I learned from watching my family, friends, and neighbors in Elmwood and the surrounding communities: my faith, determination, drive, and devotion to my family.
This opportunity to serve on the Board of Trustees is an opportunity to use my unique knowledge and experiences to serve the community to whom I owe all my current success and happiness. Guided by my own experiences, I want to see Elmwoodutilize our unique advantages to develop and grow in the coming years.
My primary goals, if elected, will be:
1.) Develop 5, 10, and 20-year plans/goals for the village – To have a vision for the future
2.) Bring professional and steady conduct to the village leadership
3.) Seek new investments for our main street and bring growth to the community
4.) Develop incentives that encourage new families to move to Elmwood
I’m honored to have this opportunity to run for the Board of Trustees and I look forward to investing in the community, just as the community has invested in me.

Terry Carlton
My name is Terry Carlton and I was raised on a farm near Alvo, Nebraska. I graduated from Waverly High School in 1977 and held welding positions for many years, including five years in Colorado. I have been married to Connie for 37 years, and we have one son, Clay, who graduated from Elmwood-Murdock in 2008. Our son, along with his wife Laura, teach and coach at Lourdes Central Catholic School; they have one son, Kamden.
Connie and I purchased our home in Elmwood in 1984. I coached little league baseball and Legion baseball for nearly 20 years. I have been a volunteer for Teammates, mentoring at the high school level for 4 years until the young man graduated and went on to study at the university.
I have been employed with Ash Grove Cement in Louisville for over 32 years; as I stated earlier, I am a welder by trade, but have been employed as a control room operator for 20 years. I am a 32-year member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local D-174; serving on the Safety Committee, as Chief Steward, Vice-President, and two terms as President. During these years I helped successfully negotiate six contracts, representing over 100 working families. In July 2017, I finished my term as Union President, deciding not to run again.
Should the residents choose to Vote for me; I am fiscally responsible, and traits that I admire include Commitment, Honesty, and Civility. Thank you.

"The Forgotten Carols” Kicks Off Christmas Season at the Lofte
Manley, NE [November 28, 2018] - The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces the opening of its Christmas production, “The Forgotten Carols,” on December 2 at 7 pm. The script and original music are written by Michael McLean. Mr. McLean was the producer for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for nearly 20 years. The music and story are family friendly and will soon have you in the Christmas spirit.
Directed by Kevin Colbert of Weeping Water, "The Forgotten Carols" tells the story of Connie Lou, a nurse whose empty life is changed when Uncle John, a new patient she is attending, recounts the story of Christ's birth as told by little-known characters in the nativity story. The accounts from the Innkeeper, the Shepherd, and others help the nurse discover what the world has forgotten about Christmas, ultimately encouraging her to open her heart to the joy of this special season.
Sara Mattix of Bellevue stars as Nurse Connie Lou. Kevin Colbert is pulling double duty in this production both directing and starring in the role of the mysterious Uncle John. Rounding out the cast are John Bell of Omaha, Brenda Jones of Louisville, Vic Kiefer of Plattsmouth, Lynette Boyce of Lincoln, Brandy Hall of Papillion and Scott Pope of Eagle. Also in the production is a community choir directed by Brandy Hall. Choir members include Lyle Reinholz, Megan Lane, Rebecca Adams, Lily Borland, Timothy Campbell Christina Daley, Jeff Hanson, Pat Lane, Jerry Patry, Ken Patry, Kendra Reynolds and Nick Roth all of Omaha, Adele Bakirane, Gabriella Bakirane and Bob Boyce of Lincoln, Jean Colbert and Tyge Thomas of Weeping Water, Molly Feile and Chelsea Lulla of Ashland, Ken Snyder, Janet Sorensen, Abraham Vidaurre and Jim Wolcott of Elmwood and Diana Geditz of Louisville.
