dawn eclipse 08212017

Did you see it? Did you see the Eclipse? Were you one of the thousands in Nebraska who had been hearing about the eclipse passing over us for more than two years?

Yes, I drove south a few miles and was not disappointed. I saw hundreds of out of state cars come through Elmwood as well as vehicles from Omaha trying to avoid the traffic jams on Highway 50. Can you believe it, the Cass County sheriff's department directing traffic at Hwy 50 and 34?

I made it a point of saying hello to people and welcome to Nebraska. To me, that was the big event. Talking to people from New York and California who had never been to Nebraska before.

It was an adventure and an event. Thank you to the Elmwood library and Elmwood-Murdock Public Schools for hosting Eclipse education events and for these radical Eclipse glasses.

PANCAKE FEED

Sonshine pancakes

Lots of people came out to the Son-Shin pancake feed last Sunday. It's always wonderful when you can get two out of three meals without having to cook and support our local organizations. Proceeds go to making Son-Shine a better place for our kids!

The crosses here are the ones we plan to get. They are made of a very high-density material that is also used to replace teak decks on yachts. The initial order was received last week, so plans have not yet been made to removes the old crosses, cement and install the new ones.

20170819 112401Just received "Wings of Fire"

New chapter books for grades 4-7!

Five dragonets are hatched under a mountain, in the care of a group of rebel dragons, the Talons of Peace. They are key to a prophecy that will end the war raging among the dragon tribes. They clearly have a destiny, but no one is sure about the role of Glory, a beautiful Rainwing. She was not one of the original five, but a replacement for an egg that was cruelly smashed in an attempt by power-hungry dragons to thwart the fulfillment of the prophecy. When her life is threatened, the dragonets stage a daring escape from the mountain but are captured by the Skywing queen, Scarlet. She forces them to participate in gladiator like competitions for her amusement.

Each one is eventually forced to fight Peril, her champion, whose very touch is made of fire. A fight with Peril is certain death, and she instills fear in all who meet her-all but the Mudwing dragonet Clay. The two develop a cautious and unlikely friendship. As the dragonets fight to survive, and Clay's relationship with Peril deepens, thrilling secrets of their pasts are revealed. Fully fleshed-out characters have unique personalities influenced by the distinct traits of their tribes. Plot twists and turns abound and will keep readers cheering for the dragonets to the end.-Mandy Laferriere, Staley Middle School, Frisco, TX

EMKnights Banner School has started and that means football games, club meetings, volleyball, and a whole calendar of activities. Please feel free to send me updates, photos, and announcements you would like our community to know about. Remember, if you don't have a child in school we don't get the announcements and many of us would like to attend the suppers, science fairs, carnivals, and other events at the schools.

Likewise, we enjoy seeing photos of what the classes are doing, the band events, the choir performances and One Act Play activities. Is FBLA doing something special, is the Student Council having a fundraiser? Is a student athlete highlighted in a newspaper for an achievement? All of these things are news in our community.

Husker Fans Salute the Troops 2017

Husker Fans Salute the Troops 2017 –  The mission is to salute Nebraska Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines: active duty, national guard, reserve, retired and veterans, to say “Thank you for your service to our Nation” so they know the Husker Nation will never forget their sacrifice and dedication.

This is an unprecedented event in the history of military support to the Armed Forces.  This weekend hosts troops and their families from all services, of all ranks, to come together and cheer on their team as they play Purdue on October 28th, 2017.

This weekend is more than just a watch party, though.  It is a chance for these servicemen and women to be treated like the heroes they are with an all access, private tour of Memorial Stadium and a brunch in their honor.

2017 marks the tenth year for this event.  2008 was the first year held during the OU game and attended by about 70 troopers and their families. Since then we have had to limit our attendance as it has grown to nearly 500 attendees. Each year we try to improve the troopers experience and being our tenth year we are expecting this to be the best.

Registration for the 10th annual Husker Fans Salute the Troops is now open to first-time attendees --http://www.huskersalute.org/.

ElmwoodParkHi, Elmwood Park Lovers...

We are needing some volunteers to help at the Harvest Moon Hustle after party

Friday, September 15th from 6:00 to 11:00.pm

We will be working at the Elmwood Fire Barn making sure people know where they are going, keeping the tables cleaned up, taking tickets, and whatever else needs to be done.

I did it last year and had a blast! You get to meet a ton of really fun people who have just finished running a long race and are grateful to have a place to sit and relax. There is a band playing so plenty of great tunes and you get dinner before it starts!

And the totally awesome part is that the Harvest Moon Hustle group will make a $400 donation to our park for providing volunteers.

That is what I like to call EASY MONEY! If you are interested let Julie Anderson know or go to the website, click on the register button, and sign up to be a volunteer for the after party.

It will look like you are signing up to be in the race but no worries, it is already full. You are just signing up to be a volunteer. You will have a blast!!

Elmwood Town Board News

The Community Development Agency met on Wednesday, August 2nd at the Elmwood Community Center.  The public was invited to attend.  Elizabeth Chase, a representative from the Nebraska Main Street Network was in attendance.  Nebraska Main Street Network partners with communities to help revitalize main street areas by connecting people, exchanging ideas, providing guidance, and working together with communities.

The group discussed current positive and negative aspects of Elmwood and noted it was similar to the list from 2002.  The general condition of the streets was a topic that was very concerning.  Everyone agreed that B Street between 6th and D Street needs attention.  It was also noted that some of the asphalt streets had weeds in the cracks and needed to be sprayed.   There are also derelict properties that need to be improved.  Positive aspects of Elmwood include the location between Omaha and Lincoln, the great school district, the new housing development, and a great strength is that people want to grow as a community.

Elmwood has several events in the fall that bring a lot of people to town:

  • Bubble Soccer Tournament in early September (brings in people who play the game and many people who cheer for them)
  • Harvest Moon Hustle (brings in 1300 runners for the 5k/10k plus their families and friends)
  • Market-to-Market Relay in late September (Elmwood is an exchange point for relay teams who begin the race in the Old Market in Omaha and race to the Haymarket in Lincoln.  Thousands of people pass through Elmwood on that day.)
  • Elmwood Holiday Extravaganza in November (a big draw for people to come and experience the small town celebration.

All of these events are an opportunity for Elmwood to showcase our town. To read the complete minutes and notes from the Elmwood Community Development meeting click on the link below.

CDAMeeting08022017.pdf

The next topic for the group was, “What are the issues facing the future development of Elmwood?”

With the increase in population, it would be interesting to explore what it would take to have increased law enforcement services.  Commercial and business development opportunities would serve the community and help with growth.  Affordable housing in the form of apartments, duplexes, and single family homes are high in demand.  A place for the elderly to transition into from their homes that are now too big such as an assisted living facility would give longtime residents a place to move to yet still remain a member of the community.  This would allow them to continue being a member of lifelong churches or clubs and to be near their families.

The main street is always a concern because a vital main street shows the health of a community.  Elmwood is far from being a community on a downward slide and the main street should reflect that.  Revitalization of the main street could bring in new businesses and new opportunities. The first step in this process is to find out what people want to see in Elmwood and what businesses they would support.   A survey will be distributed to the residents of Elmwood and surrounding area.  This will help with the planning phase for the Vision Group which will be forming soon.  This group will aid in the future growth and planning for the Village of Elmwood.  The future is bright for Elmwood and the citizens are clearly engaged and ready to move forward.
