Elmwood Volunteer Rescue Squad TRAINING
Last week the Elmwood Volunteer Rescue Squad had their monthly training meeting. This time it was on a very timely topic. Reversal of overdose treatment using NARCAN (naloxone) Don't just think of illegal drug overdoses such as heroin, which is on the rise nationwide, but Narcan also addresses the increase of prescription opioid drugs.
This starts innocently due to an injury or surgery and a doctor prescribes Vicodin or Oxycontin and it ends up being addictive. Many people think that if one pill is good, more is better. The danger of an overdose is certainly an issue and worrisome.
Our volunteers on the Elmwood Rescue squad take their responsibilities seriously. Dr. Eric Ersnt, EMS Physician Medical Director from the UMNC and the Medical Director, Bellevue, Elmwood, Nehawka, Weeping Water, and Greenwood Fire Departments gave the training last Wednesday.
We are extremely lucky and fortunate in our area to have such dedicated volunteers. They make over 120 calls per year in the Elmwood-Murdock area and are often called to other parts of the county and state for backup in emergencies. Just recently they assisted the Plattsmouth Fire and Rescue due to the severe thunderstorms and winds that came through the area.
(Thank you, Ed Blunt for calling and letting me about the meeting)

Village of Elmwood Clean Up Day
Did you have junk to get rid of last week? Well so did a lot of people! Over 5 dumpsters were filled with recyclables, worn out furniture, metal, old fences, old roofs, and everything else in between including our dryer that didn't sell at the garage sale. It was on its last legs, I didn't feel bad. They brought in the BIG equipment to mash down the metal and create more room. If you were a little kid this was "big toy" heaven.
Thanks to the town board for holding this each year. It helps keep our town neat and clean and free of trash and clutter. It is also a LOT more convenient than hauling to Omaha or Lincoln. Just store it in your garage or shed until June comes around and you can even have someone pick it up for you.

We all have ways within our various organizations to honor and thank individuals who put forth an exemplary effort for the organization. But how do you thank someone who voluntarily puts forth an outstanding effort for the entire community or goes out of their way to help out a neighbor?
Well, the Elmwood-Murdock Merchants’ Association (EMMA) Good Neighbor Award is the answer to your question. This award recognizes individuals who make the Murdock and Elmwood communities a better place to live.
Maybe you have received the Good Neighbor Award yourself—remember the thrill of riding the float in the 4th of July parade, receiving your certificate, or seeing it posted at the Cass County Fair for all to see?
Take time to pay it forward and nominate another deserving community member.
See who won past awards for being a good Elmwood-Murdock Neighbor
Nominations are now being accepted. Forms are available at the EMMA website (elmur.org). The deadline has been extended to Saturday, June 17, so act fast!
Just a reminder that past recipients are not eligible to be nominated again. There are many more out there - let's honor them this year!
Register Now for Summer Reading!
This summer, we will learn about how to build a better world.
We will check out big buildings like the Eiffel Tower and we will build small buildings with Legos! We will discover ways that we can help “Build a Better World” by the things we do and how we work with others.
We will do all of this while we do art projects, play games, check out some cool building materials and—of course—read!

Elmwood Blood Drive
30 pints of whole blood was collected and our was 20!
Your blood drive potentially saved 90 lives!
Drive Date: June 12, 2017
You know the difference your blood drive makes. By coordinating a blood drive, you are committed to supporting a valuable service to your community and the nation. On any given day, 14,000 pints of blood may be required to meet the needs of patients in our local hospitals.
The Red Cross thanks you for the strong relationship we have in working together to ensure blood is available for patients in need across the nation.
We hope that your role with the Red Cross is as important to you as you are to the Red Cross. We encourage you to continue your work to provide opportunities for generous blood donors to share their gift of life with patients in need. The stability of our nation's blood supply is in the hands of thoughtful, dedicated volunteers like you, who understand that healthy people should give blood for patients in need.
Again, thank you for your efforts in coordinating a successful blood drive!
Thank you to JoAnna Hill for coordinating the blood drive and sending me the information. Great job!

“Beatles & Brews” at the Lofte Saturday Night!
Manley, NE [June 19, 2017] - The Lofte Community Theatre is celebrating the music and motors of “Yesterday,” with a Beatles-themed evening event.
Saturday, June 24 5:00 -7:00 pm
Starting at 5 pm, those who wish to show off their classic automobiles are invited to park in a specially designated place on the Northeast side of the theater. An outdoor beer garden will be open from 5-7pm. Visitors are welcome to enjoy an adult beverage with their friends while taking in the sights of vintage cars. This is not a formal car show by any means, but simply an opportunity to cruise to the Lofte and show off your car to the neighbors.
At 7 pm, the best Beatles tribute band in Omaha, “Come Together,” will take the stage. With three-part vocals and instruments, they recreate the best of the Beatles songbook.
Tickets to the event are $20 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. No prior registration is necessary for classic cars. The Lofte is located just east of the town of Manley, just a couple of miles from the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 50 in Cass County. Those wishing to purchase advance tickets may call the Lofte at (402) 234-2553 or visit Lofte.org.
It is getting to be that time of the year again. Time to start thinking about fair entries and exhibits.
