Wearing of the Green at the Elmwood Community Center

The smell of corned beef wafted onto the streets on St. Patricks Day at the Elmwood Community Center.

ElmwoodCommunityCenter 317Although I'm not a fan of corned beef I had to stop by and was glad I did. It was a good break in my daily routine to sit down and chat with Eugene Bornemier about what else, food.

Seriously, talking about food, while eating food. What a concept. Roasted broccoli in fact. It's green, it was St. Patricks Day. It's appropriate.

Remember the community center serves lunch every day. The food is always good and everyone is welcome. You never know who you will see. Or what the topic of conversation might be.

Elmwood Bicycle Tourists

Did you know that Elmwood is on a tourism route? Maybe you didn't, but maybe you have seen bicycles outside of the Elmwood Convenience store, outside the Quonset, or on Main Street. The MoPac trail brings visitors from Lincoln and across Nebraska.

On St. Patricks day these ladies decided to take a bike tour and after finding the Elmwood website we became their lunch stop. I met them outside the Community Center where they barely missed lunch.

Their attention soon turned to Bits and Pieces were quickly said they could spend hours in there. (don't we know it!) I turned tour guide and mentioned they should come back and stay in our local AirBnB. They were intrigued, Kirk gave them a tour and they were excited to spend a weekend in Elmwood someday soon.

Elmwood Library News

lego 1124009 640The Elmwood Library Needs Legos

Legos are all the rage and we are adding them to the library for Summer Reading.

Following Summer Reading they will stay here permanently as an interactive resource. We have ordered several sets of Legos but need a whole lot more!

If you could check out the bottom of your toy boxes or the back of your closets and donate those odd pieces that are living there we would be thrilled!

We will, of course, accept donations of new pieces, too! Even adults are finding that using their skills to build amazing buildings and other items is a lot of fun.

Please, join in the fun and donate then you, too, can make your building dreams become a reality!

E-M Seniors Are the Voice of Knights

state game announcingElmwood-Murdock high school added a digital journalism class this year. In addition to producing a weekly news broadcast and other video projects, the class also covered home varsity football and basketball games for StrivTV.

Two seniors, Whitney Koehn and Jenna Meyer, became the official “Voice of the Knights” at 6 football games and 13 girls and boys basketball games. They also had the honor of announcing the first-round state boys basketball game for another sports program.

Whitney and Jenna didn’t just put in the hours in headphones during their live broadcasts, but they also prepared before each game collecting statistics on opponents and writing clever comments to share during each match.

Announcing basketball

Whitney and Jenna’s broadcasts had a fan following from local community members and also from the high school athlete’s friends and family members who lived far away.

Although the live broadcasts were a little stressful, the two reporters seemed to enjoy the level of energy and improved their announcing skill throughout the season.

Announcing football

In fact, for Whitney Koehn, her sports coverage will not end in high school. She will play volleyball for Nebraska Wesleyan University in the fall and has secured a job in the college athletic department – hoping to put her athlete video and sports broadcasting experience to good use.

To hear Whitney and Jenna’s sports announcing and see some boys basketball athlete videos, go to http://striv.tv/channel/elmwood-murdock/ and check out BB vs Oakland-Craig.

Good job girls and thank you to Karey for submitting the news and images.

ETV Television to Highlight Elmwood-Murdock Quilt Project

Last summer, a producer from NETV videotaped interviews with Maechelle (Mickie) Clements and Kurk Shrader regarding the Cass County barn quilt project.Patchwork 500

In March, NETV is airing a one-hour program called "Patchwork on the Plains". This is a look at the history, family traditions, patriotism and community pride that goes into painted plywood barn quilts.

Mickie Clements had a vision to start the barn quilt project in Nebraska and wanted Cass County to be the first Nebr. county to display them.

It was made possible through the joint efforts of the Elmwood-Murdock FBLA and art students, students and Kurk Shrader.

The Cass County barn quilt website is: http://embarnquilts.weebly.com/

Junior Vet Camp

For students completing 2nd - 5th grades

The Oxbow Junior Veterinarian Camp is designed especially for children who have a passion for animals and veterinary medicine.

The 4-day camp includes many hands-on activities involving live animals, games and unique crafts.

Campers learn about veterinary tools, x-rays, body systems and functions, and important issues like animal over-population. In addition, they also get to practice activities like real veterinarians perform, including record-keeping and animal health exams.

At the end of camp, they perform a mock surgery, using all that they’ve learned. Campers get their very own set of scrubs and a stethoscope to take home.

Elmwood-Murdock Elementary School (Elmwood, NE) June 5 - 8

I have a special attachment for this camp as I worked at Oxbow Animal Health for many years and this was a project I helped start. Any child who loves animals would love this camp.

For more information and registration visit the Oxbow Academy website.
