A Look at life with Nebraska State Senator Rob Clements
Welcome to Part 2 of my interview with Rob Clements
A few weeks ago the Elmwood community newsletter was granted the first interview with the newest State Senator, Rob Clements.
Upon sitting down at Rob and Peggy's kitchen table Rob took out a piece of paper, printed front and back with pencil scratchings filling the border.
This is his official legislative agenda. The agenda of just the bills and resolutions for the day. My eyes boggled. This is NOT his personal agenda of meetings, breakfast, lunch and dinner meetings.
"How do you keep up?" Was my question.
"Well, there is a system, and I do read about every bill. Let me show you" was Rob's very calm response with a smile in his voice.
Anyone who knows him has heard this type of response as he has discussed a loan or financial matter. I know I have.
Rob turned his laptop towards me and proceeded to show me who introduced each bill and committee notes, hearing notes, testimony and amendments and voting logs are listed on the state website.
This information is available to everyone. Every citizen of Nebraska can stay informed by going to the Nebraska Legislative Offical Site.
"I refer to this often. I can find that person with a different opinion and walk over to them in chambers and ask why they voted the way they did on a particular bill"
From this information, Rob puts his own "code" in the margin with either a final N or Y based on how he will vote that day. There is no time during the day to read all of the bills and review all the information. This becomes nightly "homework"
Each bill needs to be voted on and approved three times. At each phase, amendments can be introduced. Some senators (no names) can make a "hobby" of introducing amendments to delay and sway to vote. In essence creating a filibuster.
Every state senator has an administrative aide and a legislative aide. The duties of both are to relieve the state senators of the minor tasks and to increase the time and effectiveness of the senator.
The legislative aide maintains the daily schedule, arranges meetings, interviews (although being the Elmwood editor I have an inside track), and manages mail and allows Rob to concentrate on the bills at hand.
The legislative aide concentrates on gathering information on the bills and laws so the senator has information quickly at hand when needed. They are the research part of the process and an invaluable part of each senators' life.
"I was concerned I wouldn't be able to meet like-minded conservative Christian legislatures. I was pleasantly surprised. There is a weekly Wednesday bible study group who have been very helpful. "
"I can see some see some very good friendships coming from this opportunity"
The spouses are not left out. Just as Peggy has had to adapt her life so have the other spouses. Every month there is a Nebraska Legislative League meeting and activity. There is also a Bible study for spouses.
Both Rob and Peggy have been made to feel very welcome and they are very grateful for the support from family, friends, and colleagues in the State Legislature.

ETV Television to Highlight Elmwood-Murdock Quilt Project
In March, NETV is airing a one-hour program called "Patchwork on the Plains". This is a look at the history, family traditions, patriotism and community pride that goes into painted plywood barn quilts.
Mickie Clements had a vision to start the barn quilt project in Nebraska and wanted Cass County to be the first Nebr. county to display them.
It was made possible through the joint efforts of the Elmwood-Murdock FBLA and art students, students and Kurk Shrader.
The Cass County barn quilt website is: http://embarnquilts.weebly.com/

As you may know, Mr. Novak will be retiring from the Elmwood-Murdock School District at the end of the 2016-17 school year.
The Elmwood-Murdock Board would like to put together an appreciation video/photo book to present to him at a retirement open house that will be held the end of May 2017.
We are asking for your help with this project. We would like for students, parents, friends or patrons of the district to submit photos, videos, notes, etc. to put into the video/photo book. You can make an i-phone video of a personal message, write a special note or submit pictures of memorable moments.
Any contribution is welcome. Please submit to the following email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Junior Vet Camp
For students completing 2nd - 5th grades
The Oxbow Junior Veterinarian Camp is designed especially for children who have a passion for animals and veterinary medicine.
The 4-day camp includes many hands-on activities involving live animals, games and unique crafts.
Campers learn about veterinary tools, x-rays, body systems and functions, and important issues like animal over-population. In addition, they also get to practice activities like real veterinarians perform, including record-keeping and animal health exams.
At the end of camp, they perform a mock surgery, using all that they’ve learned. Campers get their very own set of scrubs and a stethoscope to take home.
Elmwood-Murdock Elementary School (Elmwood, NE) June 5 - 8
I have a special attachment for this camp as I worked at Oxbow Animal Health for many years and this was a project I helped start. Any child who loves animals would love this camp.
