Christmas for the Cronks!

Christmas came early at the Cronk residence this year. Amanda sent a letter to the radio station B107.3 to their Christmas Wish list and told them about the rough year they have had and how she wanted something special to happen to the kids. She also wished for a new Christmas tree. They were surprised this week by the morning DJ’s from B107.3, Gina and Joe. They brought the Cronk family a brand new Christmas tree and all the trimmings. They also brought Santa Claus with them and he brought Christmas presents for the kids. He did some magic tricks and sang Christmas carols. The whole visit was videotaped and sound recorded and will be aired later. B107.3 plays the best of the 80’s, 90’s, and today.

Holiday Extravaganza!!
In Mrs. Aldrich’s short story entitled “I Remember,” she recalls what made her childhood holidays special. It just seems fitting that the Merchants’ Association adopted this as the theme for this year’s Holiday Extravaganza Starry Knight parade. As you reflect upon your holiday traditions, we hope you and your family have developed some fond memories of the Extravaganza activities that have been coordinated over the years. This season is no different. Association members have worked diligently to maintain many activiites from the past while organizing new events. Check out the schedule within this newsletter or at elmur.org and create new holiday memories by inviting your friends and family to this year’s Extravaganza. You’ll be glad you did!
Kurk Shrader, EMMA President

A new event this year at the Holiday Extravaganza will be Candy Cane Lane. It will be located in the Old Bank Building at the corner of 4th and D Streets. Merchant Association members have been encouraged to display decorated trees, nativity sets, or any holiday item to represent their business.
Why not enjoy a delicious Christmas cookie or piece of fudge while you browse the displays? A selection of candy, cookies, and other holiday treats will be available for purchase. Proceeds will go to the local Backpack Program. Candy Cane Lane will be open from 10-4. Following the lighted parade, Candy Cane Lane will reopen and serve free hot beverages.

GRAND MARSHALLS FOR THE STARRY KNIGHT PARADE:
The Grand Marshals of our parade this year are the Elmwood-area World War II veterans. We offer them an expression of heartfelt gratitude, not only for their military service, but also for their leadership in our community throughout the years. These veterans, among millions of others, were average farm kids and city kids who responded with exceptional bravery when American needed them, no matter the hardship or danger. Their generation was remarkable for the challenges they faced, but they willingly fought for freedoms which we continue to enjoy today and which our current military are fighting to preserve. We hope you will join us in thanking them for their service to our great country.

G.A.R. Veterans Musum
Our Own Hidden Treasure!
American Legion Post 247 is proud to announce that the Elmwood G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum has been chosen by Heritage Nebraska as one of the Hidden Treasures in Nebraska for 2012.
The cover letter for the certificate shown below states in part: “Hidden Treasures’ recognition is given annually by Heritage Nebraska, the state’s non-profit preservation advocacy organization. The category of Hidden Treasures is designed to call attention to special places and events in Nebraska. Hidden Treasures are found in every part of the state. They celebrate places and events that tell the story of who we are and they are worth seeking out.”
The museum, the only location honored in Cass County, was one of 29 Hidden Treasures selected from “scores of entries” from across the state. This is indeed an honor for the museum, as they have only operated as a museum for approximately 5 years.
The G.A.R. Veterans Museum will be open Saturday for the Holiday Extravaganza 2-6 pm. It is free to tour the museum. Please put this on your list of sites to see. It is awesome!

'Christmas at Leon's' Returns to Lofte Theatre
Manley, NE [November 14, 2012] - The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces that "Christmas at Leon's" will open on their stage Saturday, December 1. The original script is written by Nebraska natives Mick Kovar and Lofte Artistic Director Kevin Colbert. Original score is composed by Mick Kovar.
'Leon's' made its world premiere on the Lofte stage in 2010. Its popularity was so great that the Lofte is bringing it back again this holiday season. The story revolves around a bus full of holiday travelers who find themselves stranded at an odd little cafe in the middle of Nebraska. Each character is struggling to find their own "Merry Christmas." Uplifting songs and a heartfelt midwestern message make this a great show for the whole family.
Directed by Kevin Colbert, the cast includes Mick and Renee Kovar, Samantha Colbert, Mathew Pegler and Shelia Hansen Snell all of Lincoln; Scott Pope of Eagle and Wade Mumford of Elmwood; Larry Bauers, Brenda Jones and Jamion Biesterfeld from Louisville; Allison Tiller and Ellie Kroeger of Omaha; Anna Stroebel, Brandy Palatas and Tom Lucas of Papillion.
Clockwise from front center: Jamion Biesterfeld, Ellie Kroeger, Brandy Palatas, Mick Kovar, Sam Colbert, Anna Stroebel, Renee Kovar, Allison Tiller, Scott Pope, Brenda Jones and Tom Lucas.
