Voter registration deadlines fast approaching
Deadlines are fast approaching for Nebraska citizens who want to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election, Secretary of State John Gale says.
Gale outlined deadlines regarding voter registration for the November election:
--Mail-in voter registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 19. Registrations close at motor vehicle offices and state agencies on Oct. 19.
--In-person voter registration at county election offices ends at 6 p.m. Oct. 26.
Gale reminded people to update their voter registration if they have moved within a county, since this will save them time when they go to the polls.
The secretary of state's website (www.sos.ne.gov) provides detailed information regarding the registration process. The website includes a voter registration form, addresses and phone numbers for county election offices, and a look-up tool that allows voters to verify their registration status.
"Take the time now to register to vote so you don't miss out in casting a ballot in the November election," Gale added.
People with voting questions can contact their county election office or the Secretary of State's Office at (402) 471-2555.

Musicians from Bellevue, Bennington, Lincoln, Omaha, and Ord, competed and jammed with their fiddles, guitars, and recorders, for cash money and prizes. The judges had a difficult job, but managed to make wonderful decisions. The judges were Jim Durdin, from Clarinda, Iowa, and Alana Hux, from Lincoln, Nebraska.
In the Open Division, each fiddler had to play a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice. The winners were:
First Place - Zachary Brom, from Omaha
Second Place - Mike Oneel, from Ord
Third Place - Fiala Peters, from Omaha
In the Singing Division, each fiddler has to play and sing a tune at the same time. The winner was Devin Cartwright, who was accompanied on the guitar by his Grandmother, Deborah Mosier.
In the Fee Fi Faux Division, each musician had to play a fiddle tune on an instrument that is not a fiddle. The winner was Sharon Roberts-Yuen, from Lincoln, who played Irish Washerwoman on the bass recorder, the alto recorder, and the sopranino recorder.
In the Hocus Pous Division, the fiddler had to play a tune using cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc. The winner was Hanilla VanKirk, from Omaha, who played a fiddle tune while standing on one foot.
Next year, the 17th Annual Schoolhouse Fiddling Bee will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Auditions for "Leon's" at Lofte Community Theatre
Manley, NE [October 10, 2012] - One of the Lofte's most-loved shows is coming back for Christmas. The original script and score of "Christmas at Leon's" was written by Lincoln radio personality Mick Kovar and Lofte Theatre Artistic Director Kevin Colbert. Originally staged in 2010, the world premiere of "Christmas at Leon's," met with thunderous applause and huge audiences for the entire run.
The opening scenes of "Leon's" find a bus full of holiday travelers whom are stranded in a blizzard at a strange cafe in the middle of Nebraska. Each character is struggling with their own personal issues, but with some angelic help, soon all find the true meaning of Christmas. "Leon's" has touching songs and an honest midwestern feel so often missing from modern scripts.
This is an open audition for all roles. Artistic Director Kevin Colbert encourages everyone who is interested in this production to please come to auditions on Monday, October 22 or Tuesday, October 23 at 7pm. Please bring a short, prepared song of no more than one minute in length. The rest of the audition will consist of cold readings from the script.
