What a great way to start a Sunday!  Our local hero is once again honored by Matthew Hansen with the Omaha World Herald.  He wrote more than a column about Colonel Thomas Brewer of Wabash.  And it made the front page.  The story explains Tom's year of recovery after being wounded by a rocket launched grenade and of his desire to go back to Afghanistan.  I've heard it said that they don't make them like Tom anymore but I hope they are wrong...we need more men like Colonel Thomas Brewer if we want America to stay free.  If you missed the article Sunday just click the link below and you can read it.

Congratulations to Angie Willey for becoming an Advanced Signing Time Instructor!  Angie started her business, ABC Signing Time, after she discovered her son, Ben, responded well to learning sign language.  Angie can teach Signing Time Academy classes and workshops to expectant parents and families with children of all ages, teach Signing Time Academy classes to professionals and professional organizations, and make Signing Time presentations at local, state and regional conferences.  She is also an ABC Barefoot Kids book consultant.

Angie went to the Elmwood Public Library Preschool Story Hour last week and signed for the kids.  It was a great time and the kids learned a lot about sign language.  She will come back to sign at the PreSchool Story Hour on Thursday, March 14th.

Make the rounds this weekend and visit the local businesses in Elmwood.  Gather Boutique will NOT be open as scheduled because of the impending snowstorm.  Jen is working on some great projects so be sure and stop in next time.  I'll keep you posted in case she adds a day.  Can't wait to stop in and see her new projects!  Then & Again has new items weekly!  Deb down at the 4th Street Market not only has gift items but she has flowers, cupcakes and ice cream!  Bits and Pieces has a little bit of everything...furniture, clothes, dishes, antiques, and much more.  You can have lunch at the Elmwood C Store and check out their new menu items...meatball calzones, Mac & Cheese, Hush puppies, and coming soon...a new salad bar!  The Red Cedar Lounge offers food, a cold drink, and entertainment, too.  Last weekend was the 80's Prom.  Rock on, dude!  Come shop in Elmwood and spend a great day with some really awesome people!

ELMWOOD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:  In light of the impending snow storm this seemed appropriate.  This came from the book "Elmwood – A Village Portrait - In Commemoration of Nebraska's Centennial, 1867-1967" by Elmwood Centennial Committee

The famous blizzard of January 12, 1888, drew front page attention of the Echo.  It recounted how the morning dawned bright and clear.  It was unusually warm for a January day.  Suddenly the temperature changed from 40 degrees above zero to 40 degrees below in just 12 hours.  The storm struck between 3 and 4 p.m. with a ravaging suddenness that trapped children on their way home from school.  It was a miracle that no lives were lost in the community--in fact, two children, Guy L. Clements and William Schick were born during the storm.  Other communities were not so fortunate as the freak and furious storm belted its way across central and Northern Nebraska with force described by William McBride as "it sounded like a train"!  John P. Gonzales, one of the last survivors of the storm, told his grandchildren before his death in the 1950's how it was possible to ride horses over buried wire fences on the hard-packed snow.
